The food we eat is so important..

As we all know food is so important in our lives, I believe in the adage “you are what you eat” so making the transition from “fast food” to healthy natural food will pay dividends in the long run.

Life in the western world has changed over the past 30 or 40 years, it was normal for a family to sit down together to eat a meal. Now however it’s normal for families to grab a bite to eat on the run, to jump into the car and stop at the Mc D’s on the way to wherever you are going.

People are always hungry, ever wonder why, it has a lot to do with the nutritionally bereft food you are throwing down your throat. Your body is crying out for nutrition not just bulk, something that fills your stomach then passes through without providing your body, your temple with what it needs to function correctly.

Ignore the so-called experts who are on the payroll of the billion dollar giants when they encourage you to eat their so-called healthy foods, look at the labels….if you are buying a basic food that has 20 added things to it then don’t eat it. When they say “enriched” it means that the goodness that was in it was removed in the processing then they have added more crap to bring it up to a slightly higher level than cardboard.

I can’t emphasize this strongly enough, Sugar is the main problem, when it says on the label that it is healthy because there is no fat or its fat-free. You are meant to think it’s healthy, well no it’s not, your body needs fat, the right kind of fat obviously, but they pile in the sugar to make it tastier.

Just stop and think, how many people to you know that are sick and often sicker now than they were five or ten years ago. We live in the most powerful nation in the world, you’d think this would be at the top or near the top of the healthy league. Well if you look at the World Health Organization’s list of the country’s around the world, the US is in the bottom half of the 175 country’s listed.

There is something wrong with this, this should be a healthy country not one that is driven by the media, sickness insurance and the pharmaceutical giants.

That isn’t a typo, it’s sickness insurance not health insurance.

Mercury is a potent heavy metal toxin that can poison your brain, central nervous system and kidneys. Children and fetuses, whose brains are still developing, are most at risk, but anyone can be adversely impacted.

It’s considered such a potent toxic pollutant that just one drop of mercury in a lake would poison the lake to the extent that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) would ban fishing in it.

Yet, unbelievably, they let you carry around a mouthful of this toxic metal and would have you believe it somehow loses its capacity to do harm once it’s put into your teeth.

The average person in the US has eight mercury fillings, falsely referred to as “silver” fillings. This misleading label, named “silver” after the color of the material, opposed to the actual ingredients, has been purposely used to keep you in the dark about the composition of the fillings. Clearly, this is no small problem and calls for urgent action.

Charlie Brown, a former attorney general for West Virginia, is the executive director of the non-profit foundation Consumers for Dental Choice, and one of our esteemed Health Liberty Alliance partners. He also serves as the president of the World Alliance for Mercury-Free Dentistry.

He recently held a press conference, calling for one of the largest manufacturers of amalgam fillings, DENTSPLY, to stop making amalgam in the interest of human and environmental health.

Dental Amalgam is a Major Source of Environmental Mercury Pollution

DENTSPLY is a major manufacturer and aggressive marketer of mercury fillings. The company is also one of the world’s major mercury polluters.

“They certainly make good dental equipment,” Charlie says. “They make all the other dental materials. They don’t need to sell amalgam – it’s a tiny part of their profits – but they do so anyway. They are ignoring their duty as a good citizen for the environment.”

Amalgam contributes an estimated 10 percent of environmental mercury pollution, which means that amalgam manufactured by DENTSPLY and other major manufacturers is in fact causing direct harm to the environment. Mercury from dental amalgam is released into the air when people are cremated, for example. It also enters soils and waterways, where it becomes a major contaminant of our food supply.

“As a farmer said at that news conference in York, Pennsylvania, “I’m not giving you mercury at your table… But you are getting mercury at your table, because the mercury from the dental offices gets into our sludge and then to our vegetables.”

The sad fact is that, as Charlie mentions, American tax payers pay the cost that dentists are causing by polluting your environment with mercury. It’s time the pro-mercury dentists either stop using amalgam, or pay for the damage they’re incurring. Truly, any responsible dentist in today’s day and age would simply stop using amalgam, and any responsible corporation would stop making it.

“That’s why DENTSPLY needs to have a phase-out plan and needs to tell the dentists, “We’re going to stop making amalgam after this date and get out of that business,” Charlie says.

Success! Dental Mercury Included in International Mercury Treaty

Over the past three years, Charlie Brown has had the opportunity to work on the United Nation’s mercury treaty. The five treaty sessions — from June 2010 through January 2013 — spanned almost 1,000 days. In the end, despite fierce lobbying against it by the World Dental Association, dental amalgam was included in the treaty, and every country that signs this treaty will be required to start phasing down the use of dental amalgam.

This is no small feat considering how hard the World Dental Association fought against it, asking the delegates to leave amalgams out of the treaty, or if they put it in the treaty, to limit the measures to talk about cavity prevention like brushing your teeth.

“If the World Dental Association was that concerned about prevention, they wouldn’t be taking all this money from the major candy makers,” Charlie says. “[W]e were successful in part because of your readers,” Charlie told me. “We want to thank them because many people in the United States, all over the English-speaking world, every country in the world, people helped us. People went to their government leaders and said, “We ought to put amalgam in this treaty.” By the message you’ve gotten out, the people watching, listening, and acting – writing the letters, sending the emails, helping us with our financial needs – have all helped lead us toward getting this treaty…”

The treaty will require countries to undertake at least two of the prescribed steps to “phase down amalgam use.” Among the listed measures are:
•Setting national objectives aimed at minimizing (amalgam) use;
•Promoting the use of cost-effective and clinically-effective mercury-free alternatives;
•Encouraging professional societies and dental schools to educate and train dental professionals in the use of mercury-free dental restoration; and
•Encouraging insurance policies and programs that favor the use of quality alternatives to amalgam.

Interestingly, DENTSPLY is already planning its exit from Europe. According to Charlie, they’re sponsoring a conference in Europe in the summer, in which they’ll discuss the transition into mercury-free dentistry. Now, if the children of Europe are no longer getting mercury in their mouths, why should the children of North and South America, Africa, or Asia still be getting mercury?

Why is the FDA Refusing to Look Out for American Children’s Health?

In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is the federal regulatory agency responsible for regulating the safety of dental materials, specifically mercury amalgam. But since its inception, which is well over 100 years now, the agency has maintained the stance that dental mercury is safe—a stance that goes against the evaluation of their own scientists.

In 2010, a panel of FDA scientists made it clear, for the second time, that amalgam is not safe and should not be used in children and pregnant women. The year after, FDA’s Director of the Center for Devices, Jeffrey Shuren, was videotaped promising that the agency would make a determination on amalgam by the end of 2011. As of this writing, in July 2013, we’re still waiting for the FDA to make a decision…

“The FDA simply, somewhere along the line, sabotaged its own promises. This is not the first time – this is the third or fourth time – that the FDA has made specific promises to act on amalgam and then walked away,” Charlie says.

Part of the problem stems from the revolving door between industry and the regulatory agencies. The current FDA Commissioner, Margaret Hamburg1, came to the FDA from Henry Schein, Inc., the largest distributor of mercury amalgams in the United States.

“When she left, she was given a couple of million bucks by Schein,” Charlie says. “She sat on their board… because of this infamous revolving door that hurts us all so badly. When the Republicans are in power, the Democrats are given these corporate positions and vice-versa. When the Democrats returned to power, Hamburg returned to government, and got this tremendous appointment. “

She promised in writing that she would sell her Henry Schein stock before leaving the company, but she never did. Instead, she held on to her stock options until they gained in value—which they did since her position as commissioner favored Henry Schein’s stock. She also continued communications with the company—a fact revealed through a Freedom of Information Act request. One communiqué from Henry Schein’s council stated they would be “indebted” to her after the 2009 amalgam ruling, which kept amalgam on the market. As a result of relationships such as these, the FDA has entered into a perpetual state of inertia with respect to its position on protecting the public from the damage of mercury amalgams, whereas other countries are taking a strong stance against it.

Think the American Dental Association Protects Your Child’s Health? Think Again…

Another important variable that’s keeping the profitable scheme of amalgams going is the American Dental Association (ADA). As explained by Charlie, the iron triangle that keeps amalgam in business are:
•The American Dental Association (ADA), whose members profit from the recommendations of the Association
•The dental licensing boards, which have historically enforced the gag rule, telling dentists to stay mum on the issue of mercury in amalgams and reinforcing the use of the misnomer “silver fillings,” and
•The Food and Drug Administration (FDA)

The ADA used to own patents on amalgams, which in and of itself is a powerful commentary on the relationship between amalgam and the ADA, although those patents have now expired.

It’s also worth noting that the AdA’s Seal of Acceptance is not based on some measure of superior quality or safety. No, the ADA’s Seal of Acceptance is basically a pay-to-play system, in which the ADA endorses a product in return for financial contributions. Charlie recounts a business school case study from the 1950s, prior to which the ADA actually opposed toothpaste, saying people won’t go to the dentists if they use toothpaste! Then, the ADA decided to accept money from Crest, which led to Crest toothpaste becoming the largest toothpaste seller in the US. It’s a powerful business school case study demonstrating the power and value of securing a trade group endorsement.

Other Nations Forge Ahead to Protect Health and Environment

Amalgams have been banned in several countries, including Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Russia, and largely in Japan. And in a 2012 letter to European Union (EU) member state representatives and dental experts, the European Environmental Bureau (EEB) asked recipients to support a phase-out of the use of mercury in dentistry, both in the EU and around the world. Ten years ago, Australia told its dentists to stop using amalgam in children. Canada did the same in 1996. In 1998, the UK decided to stop using it in pregnant women to protect the developing fetus.

All of these countries began tackling the issue by deciding to protect children first. Now, however, the impact of mercury fillings on the environment is taking a front seat, and this may finally be what saves the children of the US from compromised regulators hell-bent on protecting financial interests over people’s health.

“The consultant to the European Union has recommended amalgam be phased out in five years purely for environmental reasons,” Charlie explained. “At the hearing, it was amusing because the British Dental Association kept saying, “But amalgam is safe.” To which the [EU] consultant said, “We aren’t even talking about whether it’s safe or unsafe. That’s not our decision. Our decision is it’s environmentally disastrous – [the discussion] is over.” So the health issue is no longer on the table as a factor either way, and the environmental decision is something that dentists have no expertise over.

The effect on the United States will be huge. The FDA always likes to brag, “We are the gold standard for health, safety, and food. We’re the tops in the world.” Well, if other countries keep going past the FDA, it’s no longer the gold standard. If Europe gets out of the amalgam business, it’s time for the FDA [to follow suit].

Charlie goes on to commend other parts of the US government for doing the right thing, such as the US State Department, which argued for a strong treaty that included amalgam. Besides the treaty, which will have the power to phase-down amalgam use worldwide, Charlie points out another important strategy within the US: Many agencies of the government deliver dental care directly, such as the Department of Defense, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Veterans Administration, and the Bureau of Prisons.

“We’re going to urge them to start phasing down and phasing out amalgam from direct services,” he explains. “The FDA can’t stop that. Once you work on the services you deliver directly, you set an example everywhere else. I think that’s where the United States could start – with an example – and that is something the FDA would have no power to stop.”

Setbacks in Philadelphia Demonstrates Perversion of Justice System

Philadelphia councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown wrote a law that requires a fact sheet to go to every dental patient, disclosing the risks of mercury amalgam. This infuriated the dental association, which opposed the law. Since the passing of the law, the dental association has successfully opposed its implementation, which demonstrates an interesting perversion of the justice system. Because while outright disobeying a law typically carries a punishment, simply not enforcing the law does not carry any specific penalties.

“We’ve got to realize that often after a law is passed, when many of us think “We did it’… bureaucrats can sabotage the laws,” Charlie says. “That’s what happened in Philadelphia. The fact sheet is required under the law to be on the city website; to be listed so dentists can download it and give it to patients. Patients can just read about it. Interest groups, health groups, and environmental groups can read about it.

Well, the City of Philadelphia Department of Health took the fact sheet off of the website. We discovered it. It’s hard to discover something that isn’t there, but my assistant, Silvia Dove, did that research and found that out. We brought it to the attention of the city. They said, “Okay, we’ll put it back up.” But the damage has been done. Now we don’t know if they’ll take it off again.

The commitment of the city of Philadelphia to enforcing its fact sheet law is highly in doubt. Because if they won’t even put the fact sheet on its website, as is legally required, the message to the dentists, to the Philadelphia County Dental Society is, “We’re not really enforcing this law. Don’t worry about this law.” It’s troubling that the city health department has this attitude, which they’ve had all along. I mean, the commissioner said to the dental society – we have this on tape – “Well, if you don’t like the fact sheet, you can always write one of your own.” That’s pretty irresponsible. The people are losing on this.”

How You Can Help Fight Dental Mercury

An estimated 40-50 percent of dentists in the US no longer use amalgam. That’s a good start, but it’s not enough. I urge you to get involved in this issue to help us phase out amalgams entirely. DENTSPLY is a leading manufacturer of mercury fillings – and it’s time to tell them to stop.

What’s Really In Vaccines?

Have you ever wondered what’s really in vaccines? According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control’s vaccine additives page, all the following ingredients are routinely used as vaccine additives:
•Aluminum – A light metal that causes dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. You should never inject yourself with aluminum.
•Antibiotics – Chemicals that promote superbugs, which are deadly antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria that are killing tens of thousands of Americans every year.
•Formaldehyde – A “pickling” chemical used to preserve cadavers. It’s highly toxic to the nervous system, causing blindness, brain damage and seizures. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services openly admits that formaldehyde causes cancer. You can see this yourself on the National Toxicology Program website, featuring its 12th Report on Carcinogens.
There, the formaldehyde Fact Sheet completely neglects to mention formaldehyde in vaccines. It does state, however, that “…formaldehyde causes myeloid leukemia, and rare cancers including sinonasal and nasopharyngeal cancer.”
•Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) – A neurotoxic chemical called an “excitotoxin.” It causes brain neurons to be overexcited to the point of death. MSG is toxic even when consumed in foods, where it causes migraine headaches and endocrine system damage. You should NEVER inject MSG into your body. But that’s what health workers do when they inject you with vaccines.
•Thimerosal – A methyl mercury compound that causes severe, permanent nervous system damage. Mercury is highly toxic to the brain. You should never touch, swallow or inject mercury at any dose. There is no safe dose of mercury! Even the CDC readily admits some vaccines still contain mercury (thimerosal).

SIDE EFFECTS
In addition, the National Toxicology Program admits in its own documents that:
•Vaccinations “…may produce small but measurable increases in blood levels of mercury.”
•”Thimerosal was found to cross the blood-brain and placenta barriers.”
•The “…hazards of thimerosal include neurotoxicity and nephrotoxicity.” (This means brain and kidney toxicity.)
•”…similar toxicological profiles between ethylmercury and methylmercury raise the possibility that neurotoxicity may also occur at low doses of thimerosal.”
•”… there are no existing guidelines for safe exposure to ethylmercury, the metabolite of thimerosal.”
•”…the assessment determined that the use of thimerosal as a preservative in vaccines might result in the intake of mercury during the first six months of life that exceeded recommended guidelines from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)…”
•..”In the U.S., thimerosal is still present as a preservative in some vaccines given to young children, as well as certain biological products recommended during pregnancy. Thimerosal remains a preservative in some vaccines administered to adolescents and adults. In addition, thimerosal continues to be used internationally as a vaccine preservative.”
The report then goes on to say that the FDA studies thimerosal and somehow found it to be perfectly safe. It also states that vaccine manufactures are “working” to remove thimerosal from vaccines, but in reality it’s still being manufactured right into the vaccines.

By the way, this report also reveals that the FDA requires preservatives like thimerosal only in so-called “multi-dose” vaccines -vials that contain more than one dose of the vaccine. Drug companies could, if they wanted to, produce “clean” single-dose vaccines without any mercury / thimerosal.

But they choose not to because it’s more profitable to produce mercury-containing multi-dose vaccines. As the report admits, “Preservatives are not required for products formulated in single-dose vials. Multi-dose vials are preferred by some physicians and health clinics because they are often less expensive per vaccine dose and require less storage space.”

“Mercury in vaccines is a conspiracy theory!
I’ve been told by numerous “skeptics” and doctors that there’s no such thing as mercury in vaccines, and that any such suggestion is nothing more than a “wild conspiracy theory.”

All you have to do is visit this CDC vaccine additives web page, which openly admits to these chemicals being used in vaccines right now. It’s not a conspiracy theory, it turns out. It’s the status quo of modern-day vaccine manufacturing!

Feel that headache after a vaccine?
Now, consider this: The most common side effect of a vaccine injection is a headache. The CDC admits that over 30 percent of those receiving vaccines experience headaches or migraines.

New study links wheat (gluten) and autism

Another piece in the complex puzzle of what causes autism and other related behavioral disorders appears to have been identified by a new study published in the open-access journal PLoS One. Researchers from Columbia University in New York found that wheat, and particularly wheat gluten, triggers a unique immune response in autistic children, and especially those with gastrointestinal problems. And this response, it turns out, produces an array of symptoms commonly associated with autism.

For their study, the team from both the Columbia University Department of Medicine and the Celiac Disease Center set out to assess how children diagnosed with autism respond immunologically to gluten consumption. Since previous research on the subject has been largely inconclusive, the researchers felt it was important to investigate the matter further using strict evaluative guidelines and research criteria in order to arrive at a solid and trustworthy conclusion.

After comparing the effects of gluten consumption among autistic children both with and without gastrointestinal problems to their unaffected siblings and age-matched healthy controls, the team learned that the autistic children had significantly higher levels of the IgG antibody, which targets a gluten protein known as gliadin. And based on the way this antibody functions within the body, many now believe that high levels of it can also interfere with proper neurological function.

“It has been theorized that when the immune system forms antibodies against gliadin, these antibodies cross react with self-structures within the nervous system,” writes Sayer Ji for GreenMedInfo.com about the process. “Known as molecular mimicry, this breakdown of immunological self-tolerance can contribute to a wide range of neurological problems including neuropathy, ataxia, seizures, and neurobehavioral changes including mania, schizophrenia and autism.”

“Anti-gliadin antibodies are therefore a possible cause of autoimmune neurological damage,” he adds.

In other words, many of the symptoms exhibited by individuals diagnosed with autism could actually be the result of an antibody response caused by exposure to wheat gluten. Regardless of whether or not the blood markers of actual Celiac disease are present, wheat gluten appears to greatly elevate levels of this anti-gliadin antibody within the body.

“A subset of children with autism displays increased immune reactivity to gluten, the mechanism of which appears to be distinct from that in Celiac disease,” wrote the authors in their conclusion. “The increased anti-gliadin antibody response and its association with GI symptoms points to a potential mechanism involving immunologic and/or intestinal permeability abnormalities in affected children.”

Eliminating wheat has helped many people with autism
The obvious takeaway from all this is that eating wheat is probably not a good idea if you fall anywhere on the autism spectrum, and especially if you suffer from GI disorders. Though conventional wheat is technically not good for anybody, it appears to be distinctly harmful for people with autism, and something worth avoiding.

As far as the specific benefits associated with cutting out gluten, a recent study published in the Journal of Child Neurology documents the case of one young child with autism and epilepsy who went completely symptom-free as a result of cutting out both gluten and casein, a type of milk protein. Others have reported similar improvements as a result of going gluten-free, including Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride, M.D., creator of the Gut and Psychology Syndrome Diet, also known as GAPS diet, which she used to essentially cure her son’s autistic condition.

However the big issue I feel has been ignored for too long is what actually makes people put weight on and put their lives in danger. It’s not fat, animal or vegetable, no it’s sugar. For decades now, people have falsely feared dietary fats. But in recent years, there’s finally a shift where most people are starting to understand that eating dietary fat doesn’t make you fat. And in fact, eating more good fats (yes, including some animal fats!) is actually a more stable energy source that doesn’t cause the wild blood sugar swings, insulin resistance, and hormone imbalances that fueling your body with too much carbs causes.

Nuts also help to maintain good levels of fat burning hormones in your body (adequate healthy fat intake is vitally important to hormone balance) as well as helping to control appetite and cravings so that you essentially eat less calories overall, even though you’re consuming a high-fat food. My favorite healthy nuts are pecans, pistachios, almonds, macadamias, and walnuts, and by eating them in variety, you help to broaden the types of vitamins and minerals and also the balance of polyunsaturated to monounsaturated fats you obtain.

Try to find raw nuts instead of roasted nuts if you can, as it helps to maintain the quality and nutritional content of the healthy fats that you will eat.

Also, try to broaden your horizons beyond the typical peanut butter that most people eat, and try almond butter, cashew butter, pecan butter, or macadamia butter to add variety to your diet.

One of the little “tricks” that I’ve used with clients when trying to cut down body fat is to have them eat a handful of nuts such as almonds or pecans about 20 minutes before lunch and dinner. This ends up being a perfect time to control your appetite before lunch or dinner and helps you to eat less overall calories on that meal instead of going into your meal famished and overeating.

Gut Flora May Offer Clues About Autism..

About 15 years ago, 1 in 10,000 kids had autism. Ten years ago it was 1 in 1,000, then 1 in 150, 1 in 88 and now the most recent statistics from the CDC show it to be 1 in 50 in the US.1

Most everyone agrees that this represents an epidemic of major proportions, but the question that has eluded answering is what is spurring the dramatic increase of this neurodevelopment disorder.

The possible environmental factors for autism are incredibly diverse and include factors such as vitamin D deficiency, electromagnetic fields, vaccines and mercury toxicity. But a key player in the puzzle appears to be emerging as multiple research studies look into the possible connection between abnormal gut conditions and autism.

New Study Suggests Abnormal Gut Flora May Hold Clues to Autism

It’s widely known that autistic children often suffer from gastrointestinal (GI) problems, with those experiencing the worst GI problems often having the most severe cases of autism.

It’s now being suggested, however, that these GI problems may be a symptom of an underlying problem – abnormal gut flora that is not only causing the GI disturbances but also possibly the behavioral symptoms associated with autism.

In the latest study, researchers analyzed the gut microflora of 20 healthy and 20 autistic children using fecal samples, and found distinct differences between the two groups.2 Medical News Today reported:3

“The new study detected decreased microbial diversity in the 20 autistic subjects whose fecal samples were analyzed. Specifically, three bacterial genera – Prevotella, Coprococcus, and Veillonellaceae – were diminished in subjects with autism, when compared with samples from normal children.

… The three genera represent important groups of carbohydrate-degrading and/or fermenting microbes. Such bacteria could be critical for healthy microbial-gut interactions or play a supportive role for a wide network of different microorganisms in the gut. The latter would explain the decreased diversity observed in autistic samples.”

The researchers noted that the autistic children’s gut microflora had reduced richness and diversity, which are essential factors in creating a bacterial community capable of dealing with environmental assaults.

One of the lead authors stated, “We believe that a diverse gut is a healthy gut,”4 and suggested that antibiotics, which may eliminate beneficial bacteria and have been found to be administered more often in the first three years of life among autistic children compared to non-autistic children, may also be playing a key role.

The gastrointestinal system is often referred to as your “second brain,” containing some 100 million neurons—more than in either your spinal cord or your peripheral nervous system!

The research of Dr. Andrew Wakefield was among the first to uncover the connection between a gut problem, chronic bowel inflammation, possibly caused by the presence of MMR vaccine strain of measles in the digestive tract, and symptoms of regressive autism.

Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride is a Russian neurologist who has successfully treated her own son and she treats children from all over the world in her English clinic. Her research shows there’s a profound dynamic interaction between your gut, your brain, and your immune system.

She has developed what might be one of the most profoundly important treatment strategies for preventing autism, as well as a wide range of other neurological, psychological, and autoimmune disorders—all of which are heavily influenced by your gut health.

In her research, Dr. Campbell-McBride discovered that nearly all of the mothers of autistic children have abnormal gut flora, which is significant because newborns inherit their gut flora from their mothers at the time of birth.

Establishing normal gut flora in the first 20 days or so of life plays a crucial role in the maturation of your baby’s immune system. Babies who develop abnormal gut flora are left with compromised immune systems, putting them at higher risk for suffering vaccine reactions.

If your baby has suboptimal gut flora, vaccines can become the proverbial “last straw” — the trigger that “primes” his/her immune system to develop chronic heath problems.

Gut and Psychology Syndrome (GAPS) May Hold the ‘Cure’ for Autism

I believe Dr. Campbell-McBride’s Gut and Psychology Syndrome, and Gut and Physiology Syndrome (GAPS) Nutritional program, is vitally important for MOST people, as the majority of people have such poor gut health due to poor diet and toxic exposures, but it’s particularly crucial for pregnant women and young children.

According to Dr. Campbell-McBride, in children with GAPS, the toxicity flowing from their gut throughout their bodies and into their brains continually challenges their nervous system, preventing it from performing its normal functions and process sensory information. GAPS may manifest in a wide range of symptoms, fitting the diagnosis of either autism, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), attention deficit disorder (ADD) without hyperactivity, dyslexia, dyspraxia, or obsessive-compulsive disorder, just to name a few possibilities.

The best way to prevent GAPS is for the mother to avoid all processed foods, sugar, antibiotics and birth control pills prior to conception as these cause yeast and fungi to grow and also cause leaky gut. This can then be followed by breastfeeding and avoiding the use of antibiotics during (intrapartum) and after delivering.

Identifying Abnormal Gut Flora Early On Is Crucial to Protecting Your Child’s Health

Fortunately, it’s possible to rather inexpensively identify GAPS within the first weeks of your baby’s life, which can help you make better-informed decisions about vaccinations, and about how to proceed to set your child on the path to a healthy life.

The entire process for identifying children who would be at risk for developing autism from a vaccine is described in her book Gut and Psychology Syndrome, but to sum it up, in her practice she starts out by collecting a complete health history of the parents, and their gut health is assessed. Then, within the first few days of life, the stool of the child can be analyzed to determine the state of her gut flora, followed by a urine test to check for metabolites, which can give you a picture of the state of your child’s immune system.

These tests are available in most laboratories around the world and cost a very reasonable amount, about $80 to $100 per test — peanuts compared to the incredible expense of treating an autistic child once the damage is done. In my view, it is absolutely VITAL to perform this analysis BEFORE you consider vaccinating your child. If the test results are normal, the likelihood of autism after vaccines is dramatically reduced.

As Dr. Campbell-McBride states, she has yet to find an autistic child with normal bowel flora. If you find that your baby has abnormal gut microflora, or begins to develop symptoms of autism a year or two later, the GAPS program should be started immediately, as the younger the child is when you start the treatment, the better the results. The child should not be given any vaccines until their microflora tests normal; that is, assuming you choose to vaccinate at all. Dr. Campbell-McBride cured her own son of autism using an all-natural treatment involving dietary changes and detoxification, and her hypothesis is in my view one of the most relevant.

What Can You Do to Encourage Healthful Gut Flora in Yourself and Your Child?

If you’ve taken antibiotics or birth control pills, if you eat a lot of processed or sugary foods – even if you were bottle-fed as a baby, all of these can impact the makeup of bacteria and microbes in your gut. It is vital that one continues to avoid sugar, processed foods, antibiotics and artificial hormones like those in birth control pills to limit the growth of pathogenic yeast and fungi.

This will make it easier to maintain your optimal gut flora by eating raw food grown in healthy, organic soil and ‘reseeding’ your gut with fermented foods and probiotics (this is essential when you’re taking an antibiotic), may be one of the most important steps you can take to improve your health and your baby’s during pregnancy. If you aren’t eating fermented foods, you most likely need to supplement with a probiotic on a regular basis.

Breastfeeding was designed by nature to ensure that your child’s gut flora develops properly right from the start, as it is loaded both with beneficial bacteria and nutrient growth factors that will support their continued growth. It also has powerful components that will inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria and yeast. So one of the most important foundational elements of building a healthy GI system for your child is to first eat a healthy diet with fermented foods while you’re pregnant, and then breastfeed (whenever possible) for at least one year after your child is born.

Providing abundant beneficial bacteria in the form of breast milk and, later, fermented foods is one of the most powerful ways to restore your baby’s gut flora.

Once your baby is ready to start solid foods, the first fermented food Dr. Campbell-McBride recommends for your infant is raw, organic grass-fed yogurt (not commercial yogurt from the grocery store), because it’s well tolerated by most infants and children. It’s best to make your own yogurt at home from raw organic milk, and start with a very tiny amount. Once yogurt is well tolerated by your baby, then start introducing kefir. If you have any problems with cow’s milk, you can always try goat or coconut milk or substitute vegetables fermented with yogurt culture or kefir culture.

5+ Tips for Autism Prevention and Treatment

Autism is a complex condition with many contributing factors and it takes a multi-faceted approach to treat it. We’re now also beginning to understand it requires a multi-faceted approach to prevent it. This includes not only optimizing your gut health as described above (both prior to and during pregnancy and for your children) as well as avoiding as many dangerous chemicals as possible. As a general rule, eating whole organic foods will go a long way toward this end, as that automatically cuts out processed foods and related chemicals, genetically engineered foods and artificial sweeteners.

Generally speaking, opting for “green” and/or organic alternatives will help reduce many of the toxins most people encounter on a daily basis. Do whatever you can to establish a toxin-free environment for your whole family, and then establish a regular detoxification program. The book Our Toxic World: A Wake Up Call, by Dr. Doris Rapp, is an excellent resource if you’re unsure of how or where to start. Other helpful tips for tackling autism include:
•Lower the EMF burden in your home, especially in your bedrooms.
•Carefully review the vaccination issue, including the conventional vaccination schedule, and know that in most US states you still have the right to opt out of vaccines.
•Avoid pasteurized milk; it’s an absolute imperative to the treatment of autism. Those managing this illness without restricting milk are deceiving themselves. This includes all milk products, such as ice cream, yogurt and whey. Even natural flavorings in food must be avoided unless the processor can guarantee that caseinate is not included.
•Completely eliminating sugar/fructose, juice, soda, French fries and wheat (pasta, bagels, cereal, pretzels, etc.) is also highly recommended.
•Get proper sun exposure. It is my personal belief that vitamin D deficiency in conjunction with damaged gut flora may be two of the most significant contributing factors to autism. Optimizing your vitamin D levels and your gut flora during pregnancy may be two of the most important prevention strategies discovered to date.
