Obesity Bigger Health Crisis than Hunger..

It has taken decades, but medical professionals are finally starting to give diet and exercise for the prevention and reversal of type 2 diabetes some well-deserved attention.

“… the new study can give people with the disease hope that through lifestyle changes, they could end up getting off medication and likely lowering their risk of diabetes-related complications,” Reuters Health reports.1

The research,2 also featured by MedPage Today,3 demonstrates that diet and physical activity are the answer diabetics have been searching for, which is exactly what I’ve been teaching since I started this web site, 16 years ago.

It’s worth noting that I do not at all agree with some of the dietary recommendations given to the participants in this study. For example, I believe including healthy saturated fats and avoiding processed liquid meal replacements would be a wise move.

I also believe following the dietary recommendations laid out in my free Nutrition Plan can provide far better results than those achieved in this study.

The researchers randomly assigned diabetic participants, who were also overweight or obese, to an intensive program of diet and exercise, in which they were urged to cut calories down to 1,200-1,800 calories per day and engage in nearly three hours of physical exercise per week.

After one year, 11.5 percent of the program participants no longer needed medication to keep their blood sugar levels below the diabetes threshold. Only two percent of the non-intervention group experienced any significant improvement in their condition.

Those who’d had been diagnosed with diabetes more recently saw greater blood sugar improvements on the program. Ditto for those who lost the most amount of weight and/or made the greatest progress in raising their fitness level. The lifestyle intervention group also managed to sustain their remission better over the following three years.

The Only Way to Avoid and/or Reverse Type 2 Diabetes

Amazingly, one in four Americans has some form of diabetes or pre-diabetes. If this is not a clear sign that conventional health recommendations are flawed, I don’t know what is. I too have personal experience with this disease. I developed it myself for a short while, when I tried to implement an Eat Right for Your Type program in the late 90s.

Additionally, most of my paternal relatives (my dad included), have, or have died from, diabetes. My personal experience with diabetes and subsequent review of the literature made it very clear to me that virtually every case of type 2 diabetes is reversible…

And the cure for type 2 diabetes has nothing to do with giving insulin or taking drugs to control your blood sugar. In fact, giving insulin to someone with type 2 diabetes is one of the worst things that can be done.

The truth of the matter is that type 2 diabetes is a fully preventable condition that arises from faulty leptin signaling and insulin resistance, both of which are directly diet- and exercise-related. It is NOT a disease of blood sugar.

Once you understand that, the remedy becomes clear: To reverse the disease, you need to recover your body’s insulin and leptin sensitivities. The ONLY way to accomplish this is through proper diet and exercise, as detailed in my free Nutrition Plan. Bariatric surgery, which is being increasingly recommended as a diabetes treatment, will NOT do the trick, and there is NO drug that can correct leptin signaling and insulin resistance… Adhering to the following guidelines can help you do at least three things that are essential for successfully treating diabetes: recover your insulin/leptin sensitivity; normalize your weight; and normalize your blood pressure:
•Severely limit or eliminate sugar and grains in your diet, especially fructose which is far more detrimental than any other type of sugar. Following my Nutrition Plan will help you do this without too much fuss.
•Exercise regularly. Exercise is an absolutely essential factor, and without it, you’re unlikely to get this devastating disease under control. It is one of the fastest and most powerful ways to lower your insulin and leptin resistance. If you’re unsure of how to get started, I recommend reviewing my Peak Fitness program for tips and guidelines.
•Avoid trans fats.
•Get plenty of omega-3 fats from a high quality, animal-based source, such as krill oil.
•Optimize your vitamin D levels. Recent studies have revealed that getting enough vitamin D can have a powerful effect on normalizing your blood pressure and that low vitamin D levels may increase your risk of heart disease.
•Optimize your gut flora. Your gut is a living ecosystem, full of both good bacteria and bad. Multiple studies have shown that obese people have different intestinal bacteria than lean people. The more good bacteria you have, the stronger your immune system will be and the better your body will function overall. Fortunately, optimizing your gut flora is relatively easy. You can reseed your body with good bacteria by eating fermented foods (such as fermented vegetables, natto, raw organic cheese, or raw milk kefir) or by taking a high-quality probiotic supplement.
•Address any underlying emotional issues and/or stress. Non-invasive tools like the Emotional Freedom Technique can be helpful and effective.
•Get enough high-quality sleep every night.
•Monitor your fasting insulin level. This is every bit as important as your fasting blood sugar. You’ll want your fasting insulin level to be between 2 and 4. The higher your level, the worse your insulin sensitivity is.

Diet and Healthy Aging

In related news, an article in the New England Journal of Medicine4 reviewed the conflicting research on calorie restriction and mortality.

“Two long-term studies of the effect of calorie restriction in rhesus monkeys conflict: one concludes that restriction does not affect mortality, and the other concludes that it does. Differences in dietary composition and extent of restriction may explain the discrepant results,” Linda Partridge, PhD, writes.

Yes, as always, the devil is in the details, and this is particularly true when it comes to diet. A calorie is not “just a calorie,” for example. There’s every reason to believe that the key to improved health and longevity lies not in calorie restriction per se, but in restricting certain kinds of calories—calories from sugars, to be specific. And possibly also those from poor quality proteins.

Dr. Ron Rosedale has been passionate about diabetes and aging for over 30 years and he is constantly reviewing the literature in this area. He is one of my primary mentors on this topic. He is convinced, as most other experts are, that calorie restriction does indeed provide life extension. But it is likely not because there are decreased total calories. He believes the key is to limit the carbs and excessive protein. The fat calories are “essentially free’ and do not impair insulin or leptin signaling, or the mTOR pathways, which can contribute to decreased longevity.

Dr. Partridge points out two primary differences between the two studies that may account for the conflicting results:
1.The control groups in the two studies were not fed in the identical manner. In the first study, which did find calorie restriction reduced chronic disease and mortality, the control group had no restrictions on their food intake. Rather they were allowed to eat as much as they wanted. In the second study, which did not find a correlation between calorie restriction and reduced mortality, the control group received a fixed amount of food, which was lower than the ad libitum intake. This was done in order to prevent obesity.

“Work with laboratory animals has shown that the benefits of caloric restriction are quantitative, with stronger reductions in food intake producing a greater extension in life span, provided that malnutrition is avoided,” Partridge writes. “The controls in the most recent study received a diet that was somewhat calorie restricted, and indeed they were lighter in weight than controls in the earlier study. Thus, they may have had some benefits of caloric restriction, limiting the power to detect any additional benefits from the substantively restricted diet comprising the intervention.”
2.The nutritional composition of the diets also differed between the two studies. Proportions of carbohydrate, fat, and protein were similar, but in the first study (which did find a correlation between calorie restriction and mortality), sucrose made up nearly 30 percent of the animals’ diet. In the second, which did not find such a correlation, the diet contained only four percent sucrose.

This should come as no surprise to any of you who have read any of my articles about the health hazards of sugar. The sugar molecule is one of the most ravaging, and eating a high-sugar diet is the most efficient way to accelerate the aging processes in your body. So clearly, a diet low in sugar will significantly help reduce mortality. When both the study group and the controls are fed a fixed low-sugar diet, their outcomes can be expected to be fairly comparable…

Dr. Partridge also mentions that studies have shown the composition of the protein in your diet can have a substantial effect on your health. According to Partridge:

“Studies of animal models, including rodents, have shown that reduced intake of particular nutrients, especially specific amino acids, rather than reduced calorie intake underlies the health improvements brought about by reduced food intake. This observation underscores the importance of dietary restriction over caloric restriction: the effects on health of reducing overall food intake will often depend on the composition of the diet that is fed to the controls.”

I believe this is an important point to remember, as most people simply eat far too much protein of poor quality; thinking it’s all the same. This simply isn’t true, as the nutritional content of meats and other animal products, such as eggs, are dependent upon how the animal was raised and fed. There are major nutritional differences between protein sources raised in confined animal feeding operations (CAFO’s) and those raised according to organic standards, such as grass-fed beef and pastured chickens and their eggs.

Understanding what makes for a healthy diet and lifestyle has never been more important. Shockingly, obesity has now become a greater global health crisis than hunger! Obesity is also the leading cause of disabilities around the world, according to the latest Global Burden of Disease study, published in The Lancet.5 As reported by CNN Health:6

“The report revealed that every country, with the exception of those in sub-Saharan Africa, faces alarming obesity rates — an increase of 82 percent globally in the past two decades. Middle Eastern countries are more obese than ever, seeing a 100% increase since 1990. ‘The so-called ‘Western lifestyle’ is being adapted all around the world, and the impacts are all the same,’ [co-author Ali] Mokdad said.

… for the first time, noncommunicable diseases like diabetes, stroke and heart disease top the list of leading causes of years spent sick or injured. ‘All these problems are tied to obesity,’ Mokdad said. ‘We’re even seeing a large percentage of people suffering back pain now. If we could lower the obesity rates, we’d see the numbers of noncommunicable diseases and pain decrease as well.’

People are living longer than projected in 1990 — on average, 10.7 more years for men, and 12.6 more years for women. But for many of them, the quality of life during those years is not good. On average, people are plagued by illness or pain during the last 14 years of life…”

Yes, modern medicine may be able to keep sick people alive longer, but it fails miserably when it comes to providing a high quality of life. Lifestyle-related chronic diseases are also threatening to bankrupt nations across the globe. Dr. Margaret Chan, director-general of the World Health Organization has referred to noncommunicable diseases “a slow-motion disaster” that may eventually become financially unsustainable. According to a 2011 report7 by the World Economic Forum and Harvard School of Public Health, noncommunicable diseases is expected to cost more than $30 trillion over the next two decades alone!

Clearly, something needs to change. Part of the problem is that so many of the recommendations issued by conventional medicine are seriously flawed, having been thoroughly corrupted by conflicts of interest. The notion that you cannot trust your doctor’s advice on diet and exercise is disconcerting for most people, but the fact is that many doctors are clueless when it comes to nutrition and fitness. There’s no shortage of physicians that will OK aspartame for weight control and diabetics, or tell you to avoid saturated fats and stick to a low-fat diet, for example. The list goes on. The failure of such recommendations to produce good health can clearly be seen among the general population that believes such myths.

I’ve spent the better part of the last two decades researching and trying to pin down the necessary ingredients of a healthy diet and lifestyle. The end result can be found in my comprehensive Nutrition Plan, which is available free of charge.

There’s still cause for hope however. According to a national study8 featured in The New York Times,9 there’s been a modest decline in obesity rates among 2- to 4-year-olds from poor families, which is a good sign, however small it might be. As reported by the NYT:

“The study was based on data from 30 states and the District of Columbia and covered the years from 1998 to 2010. The share of children who were obese declined to 14.9 percent in 2010, down from 15.2 percent in 2003, after rising between 1998 and 2003. Extreme obesity also declined, dropping to 2.07 percent in 2010 from 2.22 percent in 2003… It is unclear what drove the decline, but Dr. Blanck offered hypotheses.

Breastfeeding, which often leads to healthier weight gain for young children, has increased since 2000. The percentage of 6-month-olds still being breast-fed increased to 47.7 percent among children born in 2009, up from 34.2 percent among children born in 2000. Breastfeeding of infants from low-income families has risen over the years. In 1980, only 28 percent of infants from those families had ever been breast-fed, compared with 66 percent in 2011. … the amount of money spent on food marketing to children declined by nearly 20 percent from 2006 to 2009, with the biggest drop in television advertising.”

How to Stop Wasting Food

Fresh whole food is an essential part of a healthy diet, but buying and storing fresh foods does require a bit more planning and know-how, compared to stocking up on processed foods with extended expiration dates. A recent article in CNN Health10 explored the many ways you can reduce your food waste, which can cost the average American household anywhere from $500 to $2,000 a year. Below are two of my favorite tips. For the rest, which includes what to do with bread, fresh fruits (and especially bananas), please see the original article.11
•Seasonal vegetables

Use it now: As with fruit, the flavors of most vegetables marry well. Cut whatever you have into bite-size pieces, sauté a diced onion in a soup pot, and add the veggies (starting with the firmest, since they take longest to cook). Cover with vegetable broth and simmer until tender. Purée or eat chunky.

Save it for later: Make your own frozen veggies. Prepare them as you’d cook them, except stop when they’re halfway done. You can steam or boil green beans, corn, broccoli, and chard, then quickly rinse in cold water to stop the cooking, and drain and pack in freezer-safe bags. Or pickle your veggies.
•Herbs

Use it now: Fresh herbs are flavor powerhouses, so it can be tricky to improvise without a recipe. A few combos that work deliciously: Try thyme, rosemary, and bay leaf with chicken; add rosemary, parsley, and sage to pork. Toss mint, dill, and cilantro in your salads or green veggie dishes.

Save it for later: To preserve tender herbs (dill, cilantro, parsley), make a sauce or paste (think pesto) with olive or vegetable oil. Purée the cleaned leaves in a food processor with the oil and a little salt. Cilantro oil, for example, can later be mixed with coconut milk, chilies, lime, and soy sauce to make a Thai sauce for fish or chicken. Herb pastes keep up to one week in the refrigerator (drizzle oil over the top to prevent browning) and up to six months in the freezer.

Hardy herbs, like rosemary and sage, meanwhile, are easy to dry. Clean a bunch, grasp the stems, tie with string, then suspend, leaves down, in a dry room. When herbs crumble, transfer to a jar and store in a cool, dry place. Or submerge herbs in a bottle of white-wine vinegar. The flavor will spruce up your salads for months.

To this I would add the following recommendations:
•FoodSaver Vacuuming System: One of my all-time favorite tricks, which works for most produce, is to create a “vacuum pack” to help protect it from oxygen and airborne microbes that will accelerate its decay. Leave the produce in the bag it came in from the grocery store, place it against your chest and use your arm to squeeze the excess air out of the bag. Once the air is removed you can seal it with a twist tie and thus minimize exposure to oxygen.

This simple technique can easily double or triple the normal shelf life of your vegetables by keeping air away from them. I typically store my food in quart or pint glass Ball jars. The FoodSaver brand also has a wide-mouth jar sealer attachment, which is ideal for sealing your leftovers, fermented veggies, sauces and other liquids stored in a wide-mouth jar, and can keep your food fresh up to five times longer. I regularly use it for extending the life of my vegetable juice and making my juicing more efficient so I don’t have to juice every day.
•Ferment your own vegetables using all the left-overs, before they go bad. Fermenting your own veggies is a really inexpensive way to make sure you’re getting beneficial bacteria (probiotics) in your diet, and it’s much easier than you might think!

Monsanto’s GMO corn and cancer tumors

Research linking Monsanto’s GMO corn to cancer tumors

By now, nearly everyone interested in healthy living is aware of the recent research linking Monsanto’s GMO corn to cancer tumors and an increase risk of premature death in both men and women. News of the research is spreading like wildfire across the ‘net, and support for Proposition 37 — which seeks to label GMOs in foods — is growing by the day.

But the media has not yet reported on the everyday foods being sold in grocery stores right now and made with Monsanto’s genetically modified corn (GM corn). Which foods are most likely to contain Monsanto GM corn? To answer this question, I visited a local grocery store in Austin, Texas and purchased 10 breakfast cereals made with high levels of non-organic corn.

According to the Center for Food Safety, up to 85% of the corn grown in the United States is genetically modified. This means corn-based cereals that use non-organic corn have a very high likelihood of containing GM corn.

The following list presents the top 10 popular breakfast cereals most likely to contain Monsanto’s genetically modified corn. For the record, none of these cereals claim to be GMO-free, nor made with organic corn. The exact GMO content of these cereals remains a mystery precisely because manufacturers of these cereals refuse to label them with their GMO content. This lack of full disclosure by the food industry underscores the urgent need for a labeling law so that consumers can make an informed decision.

Legal note: In no way are we claiming these cereals will cause cancer tumors to grow in your body or that they pose an immediate risk to your health. Those studies have not yet been done on humans. GM corn is an experimental crop with unknown long-term effects of humans. Breakfast cereals made with GM corn may turn out to pose a significant long-term risk to human health, but that has not yet been determined. This article is presented in the public interest, reflecting reasonable caution over a common food ingredient which French scientists have now convincingly linked to cancer and premature death in studies conducted on rats.

Which cereals contain no GMOs? Nature’s Path
There is only one brand of breakfast cereal I know of that’s 100% non-GMO and 100% organic across their entire product line. That company is Nature’s Path:

If you buy breakfast cereal, and you don’t want to eat Monsanto’s GM corn, always choose cereals from Nature’s Path. This is my No. 1 most highly trusted cereal company.

Many “natural” brands that appear to be healthful and natural are actually not organic or GMO-free. For example, “Barbara’s Bakery” cereals are not organic. Although they are positioned in store shelves alongside other organic cereals, they are actually made with conventional crops grown with pesticides which may include Monsanto’s Roundup.

You may also notice that most of the cereals most likely to contain GM corn are children’s cereals. It is the children in America who are being fed the most GMOs. This represents a highly unethical food experiment being conducted on an entire generation, and the long-term effects of human consumption of GMOs are simply not known.

What we do know is that rats fed this very same Monsanto GM corn developed shockingly large cancer tumors.

The photo released by the French research team, showing large cancer tumors growing at a strongly heightened risk in rats fed a “lifetime” of Monsanto’s GM corn, is shown below. According to that study, 70% of females died premature and showed significant damage to their liver, kidneys and other organs.

Healthy, vegan alternatives to GE salmon

After a few brief tests, GE salmon, meant to grow twice as fast as regular Atlantic salmon, was deemed safe both for the environment and for human consumption. The FDA added that it would take public comments for 60 days before finally deciding on whether or not to approve the salmon.

Criticism of the recent FDA assessment points to the lack of sufficient evidence that the fish is safe for consumption, and the difficulty in measuring its real impact on the environment once mass production begins.

Where does biotech salmon come from?
The controversial fish is developed by AquaBounty Technologies, a small American biotechnology company whose main goal is to find solutions that could increase the productivity of aquaculture. Its most important research consists of developing salmon, trout, and tilapia eggs that produce fast growing specimens. To achieve this, researchers have to modify the very genetic fabric of fish. Their salmon variety has been patented and bears the trade name AquAdvantage Salmon.

The FDA report so far states that “with respect to food safety, FDA has concluded that food from AquAdvantage salmon is as safe as food from conventional Atlantic salmon, and that there is a reasonable certainty of no harm from consumption.”

What the critics say
Michael Hansen, a researcher at the Consumers Union, explained that GE fish could cause allergic reactions that the FDA is unable to anticipate. GE fish will also likely not be labeled accordingly, leaving consumers in the dark about where the fish is coming from.

If the FDA does not heed the public outcry, Congress could still prevent the commercialization of GE fish. Wenonah Hauter, director at the Food & Water Watch, urges consumers to contact their congressmen to overturn what has been called “a dangerous experiment” at the expense of consumer health.

Other concerns about GE fish pertain to its ability to outcompete natural Atlantic salmon. If it is released into the wild, the AquAdvantage salmon could adapt to new pray, survive in tough habitats, and reproduce much faster than its natural counterpart.

Andrew Kimbrell of the Center for Food Safety concluded that “the GE salmon has no socially redeeming value. It’s bad for the consumer, bad for the salmon industry and bad for the environment.”

Healthy, vegan alternatives to GE salmon
Chickpeas have been hailed by vegans everywhere for their ability to mimic fish, making them an excellent addition to faux fish salads. Chickpeas provide considerable amounts of protein, slow release carbohydrates, folate and zinc.

A delicious vegan “salmon” dish can be prepared by mixing grated carrots, mashed chickpeas, white vinegar, tomatoes, finely grated lemon peel, lemon juice, dill, vegetable oil and a pinch of salt. The mixture can either be consumed raw, or divided into patties and baked for about 25 minutes. For added flavor, vegan “salmon” can be topped with vegan mayonnaise or grated horseradish.

When choosing salmon as a means to obtain healthy fats, many may want to consider chia instead. With 724 mg of Omega-3’s in 28 grams of salmon, and 4915 mg in 28 grams of chia, chia is a clear winner.

Why Most Mercury Tests are Ineffective..

Dr. Christopher Shade, a former organic farmer, received his PhD from the University of Illinois. His education included the study of metal-ligand interaction in the environment, and for a long time, he specialized in environmental- and analytical chemistry of mercury.

About six years ago, he developed and commercialized technology for mercury speciation analysis—a process that separates and measures different forms of mercury. Shortly after starting this company, Quicksilver Scientific, he turned his focus to the clinical side, and the human body’s ability to detoxify mercury.

“The heart of mercury’s toxicity is what I call inappropriate binding,” Dr. Shade says. “Mercury is never a free ion… [M]ercury is always bound in these covalent relationships with what’s called the ligand. Mercury’s favorite ligand is sulfur; specifically a reduced form of sulfur called a thiol.

This is what you have on cysteine, like N-acetyl cysteine or in glutathione [editor’s note: which is why they’re so important for mercury elimination]. But these thiols are all throughout your body. [M]etals… like zinc, copper, or iron… are held in place by thiol groups. Mercury has higher affinity for those thiol groups than the [other] metals do.

How much higher? For zinc—a billion times higher – 10 to the ninth. When the mercury comes by… and it sees an enzyme that’s holding zinc in it, those cysteines are going to reach over and grab on to the mercury.

… Other places that mercury will bind to thiols are on cell membranes… [and] different forms of mercury will cross your blood-brain barrier.”

Mercury can also displace other elements such as zinc and copper, by attaching to the receptors that would otherwise hold these essential minerals. Overall, mercury has a very strong ability to dysregulate your entire system, which is part of the reason why mercury toxicity symptoms are so difficult to pin down.

“Neurologically, it can take you into depression, or it can take you into anxiety,” Dr. Shade explains. “Similarly, it can make you hyperactive, or it can give you chronic fatigue.”

From a more mechanical perspective, mercury destroys the enzyme tubulin, which builds microtubules that play an important role in intracellular communication. According to Dr. Shade, you can clearly see how mercury stops the assembly of tubulin in neurological cells, causing them to fall apart instead.

The Most Common Sources of Mercury Exposure

There are two primary forms of mercury:
1.Ethylmercury (inorganic mercury)
2.Methylmercury (organic mercury)

Phenylmercury was used in early paints, which is why you need to be careful with peeling paint layers in older homes. In terms of toxicity, ethylmercury rates the highest. While methylmercury penetrates your body very well, it’s slightly less toxic than the inorganic form, which is what gets released from your dental amalgams. According to Dr. Shade’s research, the two primary sources of mercury exposure are:
1.Inorganic mercury from dental amalgam, and vaccines
2.Organic mercury from fish consumption

“Vaccines would come underneath that, though they’re slowly removing the mercury from the vaccines. So, it depends if you get a lot of vaccines or not. Now if you’re going in for flu shots routinely, you might be exposed to a fair amount of mercury,” he says. “Research on spreading out doses versus punctuated doses show that punctuated or periodic high doses have more ability to penetrate the brain than distributed doses do. That’s one of the worst things about getting it from vaccines.”

Another source of mercury exposure comes from coal-burning power plants. This mercury pollution is distributed in the air, and is deposited in the ocean, where of course it bioaccumulates in fish. So indirectly, it’s still a major source of exposure.

“The one paper that has shed some light on coal-burning was the Palmer paper coming out of Texas, where they found higher rates of autism with proximity to coal-burning power plants. But that’s the only [study] that’s done that,” Dr. Shade says. “From all the data that I have looked at, from all the people that we have measured… fish and amalgam dominated everything. People who don’t have any fish consumption and don’t have any amalgam exposure, we very rarely see any significant amounts of mercury in.”

Why Most Mercury Tests are Ineffective and/or Inaccurate

While I no longer see patients, when I did, one of the standard mercury tests used was a challenge test, using a chelating chemical such as intravenous DMPS or DMSA. Then you’d measure the urine for 24 hours. You can also measure the mercury content in hair and blood. However, all of these tests have drawbacks and shortfalls, and Dr. Shade has developed a testing method that far surpasses all of these earlier tests.

While most of these older tests primarily measured total mercury load (and inaccurately at that), his technology, called mercury speciation, is able to separate and measure the different forms of mercury in your system. This allows you to determine your primary source of exposure—either fish-based methylmercury, or the dental-based inorganic ethylmercury. It can also help you evaluate how well your kidneys are processing such toxins.

Dr. Shade explains:

“When we move to speciation testing, then we’re able to take something like your blood and say, “This much of it is methylmercury from fish, and this much of it is inorganic mercury from amalgam, though some of it is from the breakdown of the fish-based mercury.”

People used to do everything as total mercury… Sometimes they couldn’t really correlate that with how many dental amalgams they had. That was because blood was primarily a measure of methylmercury exposure of fish-based exposure. In the blood, you got a high representation of your fish burden, and a lower representation of your dental burden, and thus the need to separate those two. Blood was used, but blood didn’t make sense for certain types of exposures. If you’re exposed to elemental mercury vapor, it didn’t really show correctly in the blood.”

Urine analysis has similar shortcomings.

“If your kidneys are working well and you’re excreting well, the amount that comes out in the urine will be linearly correlated with the amount or inorganic mercury in your blood. So as the inorganic mercury goes up from your loading, the urinary level will go up linearly. But if your kidneys are not excreting well, then the urinary output will be low, and you’ll get a damming up and building up of the reservoir of inorganic mercury in your blood. You’ll see high inorganic mercury in the blood, low in the urine.”

So, if you’re only looking for mercury in your urine, low levels of (total) mercury can be either good or bad, but you won’t easily know which. A low measurement could mean you have very little mercury in your system, or it could mean your kidneys are failing to process it and the mercury is actually accumulating in your tissues, OR it could mean your primary source of exposure is from organic mercury sources, so they’re not being expelled through your urine…

“Urine alone is very myopic, whereas urine normalized by the amount of inorganic mercury in the blood is a very good indicator then of how well you’re detoxifying or excreting that form of mercury,” Dr. Shade explains.

As for hair testing, while hair is a good marker of fish-based methylmercury in your blood, it will tell you absolutely nothing about the amount of ethylmercury you’re getting from dental amalgams or vaccines…

The Problem with Challenge Testing

“In a challenge test, you orally take the chelators like DMSA or DMPS. They go into your blood. They solubilize a lot of the mercury that’s in your blood, and they make it able to go very easily through your kidneys. This would round up a bunch of mercury in your blood and pass it through your kidneys. Now you would get both organic and inorganic forms coming out through your kidneys.

The problem here is the same one with all urinary measurements. If you’ve got problems in the kidney – and this happens commonly when people are exposed for long periods of time – you might not pass that mobilized mercury out through your urine.

The other problem with the challenge test is that you don’t know what the distribution is. How much of this is organic? How much of this is inorganic?

Then you got two chelators. You got DMPS and DMSA, and they’re different. They bias towards one of the other form of mercury. DMPS biases towards inorganic mercury. If you have a lot of inorganic mercury exposure, you use DMPS… Then there’s a mythology that the challenge test is showing you the body burden, like it’s reaching into every single cell taking out a representative amount of mercury in there and taking it out of the body. That’s really not true,” Dr. Shade says.

So as a summary, all of the earlier testing methods offer an incomplete picture of your actual mercury load.
•Hair testing only shows organic (methyl) mercury load
•Urine testing only shows inorganic (ethyl) mercury load
•Blood testing for total mercury load really only gives you a measure of your mercury from fish consumption, while mercury from dental amalgams and vaccines remains ‘hidden’
•Challenge testing can give false low readings if your kidneys are not functioning well, and each of the chelators are biased toward one form or mercury or the other, which can give you a misleading measurement of your mercury load

Mercury Speciation—the Next Generation of Mercury Testing

Dr. Shade’s mercury speciation technology overcomes all these problems by being able to separate and measure each of the different forms of mercury.

“You have got a lump sum of mercury in the sample. We want to pull them apart, so we know how much is the organic form and how much is the inorganic form,” he explains. “In the environment, which is what I originally developed it for, it is very important to know this because the bulk of the environmental mercury is inorganic mercury.

Inorganic mercury – even though it’s more toxic to the cell –does not accumulate well and it does not get into organisms very well, whereas methylmercury is the bioaccumulative form. That’s the one that a fish swimming in the water will have a million to 10 million times more [of]… than is in the water. It’s very important to be able to see the methylmercury separate from the inorganic mercury.

I developed this system where we could take a sample and relatively quickly – at least compared to the old methods – separate these two different forms… When I came to the clinical world, I started applying that… to blood and urine. What we found is that if you want to get a good measure of blood, you need to separate the methyl- and the inorganic mercury.”

The ethyl- and methylmercury have different reference ranges. Methylmercury is almost always higher than the ethylmercury if you’re exposed to both types. After measuring over 2,000 patients, Dr. Shade discovered that methylmercury levels in those with the highest loads is almost 15 times higher than the ethylmercury, on average.

“If you’re exposed to both, the methylmercury is always going to swamp out the inorganic mercury,” he says. “But once you separate those two, you can see very clearly how the two are tracking in the body. They have different targets in the body, and they have different sources coming in.”

… Urine can be nicely correlated to blood inorganic mercury, as long as the kidneys are working okay. That means that as blood inorganic mercury goes up, urinary inorganic mercury should go up with it. It’ll be a linear increase between the two. We can now plot out how well the kidneys are working.”

Being able to chart how well your kidneys are working is a significant benefit, as this will give you a better idea of how well your natural detox system is working. If you have high levels of inorganic (ethyl) mercury in your blood, but low mercury in your urine, it’s a sign that your body is retaining toxicity.

“These tend to be the sickest people and have the hardest time detoxifying,” Dr. Shade says. “Then we know that we have to work more on their kidneys before we go into really moving the mercury out of the body.”

The same technique is being used on hair, which, again, is an inorganic (ethyl) mercury marker. As your blood methylmercury goes up, the methylmercury in your hair should rise in a linear fashion. If they do not track together (meaning you have high levels in your blood but low levels in your hair), then it’s an indication that your biochemistry has been disrupted and cannot effectively mobilize methylmercury.

On Detoxing Mercury

According to Dr. Shade, effective detoxification is highly dependent on your glutathione and sulfur metabolism. For example, when your glutathione and sulfur levels increase, you’ll typically see higher levels of mercury coming out of your hair.

It’s important to realize, however, that detoxing cannot be achieved overnight. Or even in a few weeks. According to Dr. Shade, most people will typically need an entire year to detox, depending on how sick you are. The sicker you are, the longer it will take, simply because you have to go slower when you’re ill.

“But then you have to keep in mind one of the aspects of detoxification. You got to be mindful of that, and incorporate a lot of this into your life. I mean a lot of it is lifestyle changes that are going to keep you effectively detoxifying. Then, once or twice a year go back in for whatever period of time it takes you. Go back and do another detoxification, because even if you get all the mercury out, you’re continuously exposed to all kinds of things. I mean, you’ve got the airborne mercury coming in. You’ve got little bits through the food. Then you have cadmium, arsenic, and lead coming in… you’ve got all the different organic toxins… pesticides and herbicides… chlorinated organics… mold-based toxins… toxins from organisms that live in your GI tract, if you don’t have a perfect biotic flora…

… Probably, the biggest myth that’s got to be destroyed immediately is that mercury will stay in your body until you go in there with a chemical chelator and pull it out—that mercury is never removed from the body and it just builds up forever. That is completely a myth. We’d all be dead if that were the case.

You have a system for moving mercury and other heavy metals out of your body. They may work in different efficiencies for different people, or may be totally disrupted in some, but you have a [detoxification] system.”

How Your Body Detoxifies Naturally

One of the central problems in modern toxicology is the failure to fully understand the vast disparity amongst the population in their ability to deal with certain toxins, and their ability to detoxify them. We’re all highly individual, and exposure levels that will cripple one person may leave another seemingly unharmed. A major part of this individual difference in tolerance is the functioning of your body’s detoxification system. If your detoxification channels are working well, you will be able to withstand higher levels of toxins without experiencing obvious symptoms of toxicity.

“The core of the detoxification system is the glutathione system,” Dr. Shade says. “Notice that I don’t say, “it’s glutathione.” No, it’s the glutathione system.

Glutathione binds to metals and can move them out of your body, but it doesn’t do that alone. If we look at what the requirements for resistance to metals and effective detoxification (meaning not only the resistance but shuttling them out), you need healthy levels of glutathione in your cells. You [also] need activity of… a phase II detoxification enzyme called glutathione S-transferase. This is an enzyme that’s responsible for prying the mercury off the cellular proteins and linking it together with the glutathione. [Lets say] those two parts work: You have the glutathione; you have the glutathione S-transferase—now you have a mercury-glutathione conjugate in the cell. Now you’ve got to get it out of your body.

At the cell membrane, you’ve got active transport proteins, called multidrug resistance proteins, which pushes that mercury-glutathione complex out of the cell and into your blood. From there, you got another one at the liver… [which] pulls it from your blood into your liver; and another one that dumps it from your liver into your bile tract, to go into your small intestine. You have also got some of these transport proteins in your intestinal walls, pulling [toxins] from your blood into the intestines. And you have got them in your kidneys as well.

You have to have all parts of this going.”

If any one of these mechanisms is knocked out, your cells will lose their resistance to the metal, and bioaccumulation sets in. So in order to strengthen your detoxification system, you need to optimize the ENTIRE system from top to bottom within the transport chain, so that your body can pull the mercury away from the proteins it is bound to, and transport it out of your body.

Strategies for Optimizing Your Glutathione System

There are a number of different options for doing this. Taking oral or intravenous glutathione can be both expensive and ineffective. A more efficient way to optimize your glutathione levels is to provide your body with the precursor to glutathione, cysteine, in the form of foods that are naturally high in it. Whey protein, especially organic, grass-fed whey protein contains some of the highest levels of cysteine.

“Taking oral glutathione in a capsule is very inefficient, because your peptidases will break down the glutathione into its amino acids,” Dr. Shade explains. “… You’re left with precursors, or whey protein, which I think is probably the best precursor. Though, at the same time, you need to upregulate the activity of the synthesis enzymes that are making it from the precursors… [T]he other thing that we use a lot, which is a little bit more specialized, is liposomal delivery of glutathione…. At the same time, you’re also bringing in phosphatidylcholine, which has its own therapeutic benefits by helping to repair the cell membranes. The cell membranes are very highly damaged by metals and the free radical cascades that are catalyzed by them.

We use a lot of this liposomal glutathione. We have recently taken on the manufacturing of that that’s making a very small, high integrity liposome. But aside from liposomes, whey protein is my favorite way to get those precursors into the body.”

According to Dr. Shade, if your body is making glutathione well, then just taking whey protein should be sufficient. But if your detoxification system is severely compromised, the liposomal glutathione can serve an important function as it can offer immediate relief against the oxidative stress caused by the mercury. He typically recommends using both for people who are ill.

“Once you have repaired the system and you’re getting it working again, then the whey protein can sustain you,” he says.

But it’s important to remember that there’s more to your glutathione system than just glutathione. You also need the proper enzymes and proteins that work together with the glutathione to eliminate the mercury. These include:
•Glutathione S-transferase
•Glutathione synthetase
•Gamma-glutamylcysteine ligase

Phylogenomics—Gene Activation through Superfoods

“This is a beautiful part of the science called phylogenomics, “phylo” meaning plants, and “genomics” meaning genes,” he says. “What we’re finding is that genes are not always [expressed]…

What are triggers to start expressing these genes?

We’re finding that whole families of genes that can be upregulated together. There’s protein out in the cytoplasm called the Nrf2 protein. It’s held in place there by another protein called the KIP1. When certain chemical triggers hit it, it translocates into the nucleus. When it does so, a whole family of genes that have what I call the promoter region (it’s a way to turn on families of genes and it’s called the antioxidant response element) turns on at once. These are genes that code for production of intracellular antioxidants, as well as production of these phase II enzymes like glutathione S-transferase, and production of these phase III proteins for transport. You’re helping turn up the whole system at once.

What are the things that trigger this?

Well, a lot of these things that we consider “superfoods.” The main family of food chemicals that do this or plant chemicals are polyphenolic antioxidants like you would find in green tea extract or pine bark extract. The one we use the most is called Haritaki. We have a blend called Clear Way Cofactors, where we bring together what we think are the best polyphenolics for doing this. The other side of it is the sulfur-based chemicals.”

The Importance of Sulfur Compounds for Your Detoxification System

One sulfur-based food is garlic, which has gained a reputation for being good for mercury detoxification. As explained by Dr. Shade, garlic contains sulfur molecules that trigger the translocation of the Nrf2 proteins into your cells. Thus they trigger an upregulation of your glutathione system. So it’s really your glutathione system as a whole that is responsible for the chelating effect, but the sulfur compounds in the garlic upregulate that system, allowing it to do its job.

“You would want to use the whey protein in conjunction with some of these polyphenolic antioxidants, with the crucifer family, or garlic. Then you would get the enzyme up, as well as bringing in the precursors,” Dr. Shade says.

As a side note, allicin is NOT the chemical responsible for upregulating the enzyme system. Allicin is part of what gives garlic its antimicrobial effect. According to Dr. Shade, taking garlic oil capsules is just as good as eating raw garlic, maybe even better, for upregulating your glutathione system. Another important sulfur compound is lipoic acid, which helps regenerate vitamin C and E.

“Vitamin C—this whole defense system that we’re talking about is part of the antioxidant system,” Dr. Shade says. “You need a lot of electron donors in there, feeding into the system. You’re going to transfer those electrons into the glutathione. As you’re using the glutathione up as an antioxidant, it’s getting oxidized and needs to be reintroduced… That’s the use of vitamin C: constantly bringing electrons into the system, as well as its immune effects building up the immune system. Vitamin C is an integral part of that. But you’re not going to do vitamin C alone. That’s a very myopic scene. But it is a strong player. It’s always there. It should be one of your main pawns in this game.

Then you look at lipoic acid. Lipoic acid is a very potent upregulator of the glutathione system and specifically R-lipoate. So, without the lipoic acid, you have got two forms: You have S-lipoic acid and R-lipoic acid. These are like amino acids where you’ve got D amino acids and L amino acids.

L amino acid is the only one that fits into the biochemistry, and D does not. S-lipoic does not fit into the biochemistry. I mean, it can act as an antioxidant in the body. It can do some functions. But it can’t upregulate the glutathione system. Only the R-lipoate fits into this Nrf2 mechanism to upregulate the glutathione system. That’s why we have a liposome that’s a mixture of vitamin C and R-lipoic acid. You can take high doses of this without running into bowel intolerance and very effective delivery of that lipoic acid. That’s the common sulfur chemical that we use the most.”

Other Helpful Players

Astaxanthin, which I’ve previously written about at great length, is one of the best performers when it comes to protecting your ENTIRE cell from damage, and as such, it can be an important ingredient to help optimize your detoxification system as a whole. Dr. Shade agrees, stating:

“You got the cytosol, or cytoplasm, that’s water-soluble. Then you got the membranes that are fat-soluble. You need to take care of both the water side and the fat side. I think astaxanthin would be a great thing to incorporate into the systems.”

Another commonly used detoxification tool is chlorella, which will help detoxify your system via your gut. Chlorella is a binder, meaning that it binds to the heavy metals present in your gut, which serves two important functions as it:
1.Prevents absorption and/or re-absorption (many metals can be excreted into your bile and then be re-absorbed), and
2.Prevents the metals from irritating your intestines by holding them away from the epithelia of your intestinal wall. This helps prevent inflammation

More Information

Some states, such as Colorado, are so-called “direct access” states, in which you can buy a testing kit directly from Dr. Shade’s company, Quicksilver Scientific. Then all you have to do is get your blood drawn at a local lab, which sends it back to the company for analysis. In other states, you have to go through your primary care physician to get the mercury speciation test done. The test retails for about $350.

The sensitivity of the test is “unmatched,” according to Dr. Shade.

“We’re the only one in the world doing the speciation—the separation of the different forms of mercury. And we’re the only ones working at the low ranges than we are… We have a detection limit of 10 part per trillion. Now you compare that to one of the routine labs like Lab Quest or Lab Corp; they’ll do a blood mercury for you, and their detection limit will either be one or 0.5 parts per billion. That’s 50 times higher, at the best, than what we’re running. We’re very sensitive. We run at very low levels, so we can see ALL the changes and the ambient profiles.

…I’ll tell you that I like people [to be] under 0.05 nanograms per milligram for the dental form of mercury. That’s when you know that you’re really cleaned up. For methylmercury, that number can be a little higher. Depending upon the state of their health, I like them down below 2 nanograms per liter, or if they have shown some sensitivity to mercury, then I like them under 1 nanogram per liter.”

What’s really in vaccines?

Have you ever wondered what’s really in vaccines? According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control’s vaccine additives page, all the following ingredients are routinely used as vaccine additives:

• Aluminum – A light metal that causes dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. You should never inject yourself with aluminum.

• Antibiotics – Chemicals that promote superbugs, which are deadly antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria that are killing tens of thousands of Americans every year.

• Formaldehyde – A “pickling” chemical used to preserve cadavers. It’s highly toxic to the nervous system, causing blindness, brain damage and seizures. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services openly admits that formaldehyde causes cancer. You can see this yourself on the National Toxicology Program website, featuring its 12th Report on Carcinogens.

There, the formaldehyde Fact Sheet completely neglects to mention formaldehyde in vaccines. This is the “dirty little secret” of government and the vaccine industry. It does state, however, that “…formaldehyde causes myeloid leukemia, and rare cancers including sinonasal and nasopharyngeal cancer.”

• Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) – A neurotoxic chemical called an “excitotoxin.” It causes brain neurons to be overexcited to the point of death. MSG is toxic even when consumed in foods, where it causes migraine headaches and endocrine system damage. You should NEVER inject MSG into your body. But that’s what health workers do when they inject you with vaccines.

• Thimerosal – A methyl mercury compound that causes severe, permanent nervous system damage. Mercury is highly toxic to the brain. You should never touch, swallow or inject mercury at any dose. There is no safe dose of mercury! Doctors and vaccine pushers LIE to you and say there is no mercury in vaccines. Even the CDC readily admits vaccine still contain mercury (thimerosal).

In addition, National Toxicology Programs admits in its own documents that:

• Vaccinations “…may produce small but measurable increases in blood levels of mercury.”

• “Thimerosal was found to cross the blood-brain and placenta barriers.”

• The “…hazards of thimerosal include neurotoxicity and nephrotoxicity.” (This means brain and kidney toxicity.)

• “…similar toxicological profiles between ethylmercury and methylmercury raise the possibility that neurotoxicity may also occur at low doses of thimerosal.”

• “… there are no existing guidelines for safe exposure to ethylmercury, the metabolite of thimerosal.”

• “…the assessment determined that the use of thimerosal as a preservative in vaccines might result in the intake of mercury during the first six months of life that exceeded recommended guidelines from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)…”

• …”In the U.S., thimerosal is still present as preservative in some vaccines given to young children, as well as certain biological products recommended during pregnancy. Thimerosal remains a preservative in some vaccines administered to adolescents and adults. In addition, thimerosal continues to be used internationally as a vaccine preservative.”

The report then goes on to say that the FDA studies thimerosal and somehow found it to be perfectly safe. It also states that vaccine manufactures are “working” to remove thimerosal from vaccines, but in reality it’s still being manufactured right into the vaccines.

By the way, this report also reveals that the FDA requires preservatives like thimerosal only in so-called “multi-dose” vaccines — vials that contain more than one dose of the vaccine. Drug companies could, if they wanted to, produce “clean” single-dose vaccines without any mercury / thimerosal. But they choose not to because it’s more profitable to product mercury-containing multi-dose vaccines. As the report admits, “Preservatives are not required for products formulated in singledose vials. Multidose vials are preferred by some physicians and health clinics because they are often less expensive per vaccine dose and require less storage space.”

So the reason why your child is being injected with vaccine boils down to health care offices making more money and saving shelf space!

“Mercury in vaccines is a conspiracy theory!
I’ve been told by numerous “skeptics” and doctors that there’s no such thing as mercury in vaccines, and that any such suggestion is nothing more than a “wild conspiracy theory.” That just goes to show you how ignorant all the skeptics, doctors and health professionals really are: They have NO CLUE what’s in the vaccines they’re dishing out to people!

All they have to do is visit this CDC vaccine additives web page, which openly admits to these chemicals being used in vaccines right now. It’s not a conspiracy theory, it turns out. It’s the status quo of modern-day vaccine manufacturing!

Feel that headache after a vaccine? That’s the feeling of chemicals eating your brain
Now, consider this: The most common side effect of a vaccine injection is a headache. The CDC admits that over 30 percent of those receiving vaccines experience headaches or migraines. Gee, think about it: What could possibly be in vaccines that would cause headaches, migraines and brain damage?

Ummm, how about the mercury, the formaldehyde, the aluminum and the MSG!

Even if you believe in the theory of vaccines as a helpful way to train the immune system to recognize pathogens, why would anyone — especially a doctor — think it’s okay to inject human beings with mercury, MSG, formaldehyde and aluminum?

The argument of the vaccine pushers is that each vaccine only contains a tiny dose of these highly toxic substances, and therefore it’s okay to be injected with them. But this argument makes a fatal error: U.S. children are now receiving over twenty vaccines by the time they’re six years old! What’s the cumulative effect of all these vaccines, plus the mercury from dental fillings and dietary sources? What’s the effect of injected mercury on an immune-suppressed child living in a state of chronic nutritional deficiency?

Scientists don’t know that answer because such studies have never been conducted. So they pretend that nothing bad will happen and keep pushing more and more vaccines on infants, children and even expectant mothers. They’re playing Russian roulette with our children, in other words, where every injection could cause a seizure, coma, autism or death.

Why doesn’t the vaccine industry offer “clean” vaccines free from all toxic additives?
If vaccines are supposed to be good for you, why do they contain so many additives that are BAD for you? You wouldn’t want to eat mercury in your tuna fish. You wouldn’t want MSG in your sandwich, and you certainly wouldn’t want formaldehyde in your soda. So why would you allow yourself to be injected with these deadly substances?

And just as importantly, why wouldn’t the vaccine industry offer CLEAN vaccines? Without any brain-damaging additives?

Think about it: When you buy health food, you want that health food to have NO mercury, NO MSG, NO aluminum and certainly no formaldehyde. No sane person would knowingly eat those neurotoxic poisons. And yet, astonishingly, those same people literally line up to be INJECTED with those exact same brain-damaging poisons, with the justification that, somehow, “This injection is good for me!”

Absurdly, the vaccine industry says these toxic ingredients are intentionally added to vaccines to make them work better! Yes, that’s the reason: Mercury makes vaccines work better, they insist. Click here to see a video news report actually claiming mercury makes vaccines work better, granting children “improved behavior and mental performance.”

No, I’m not making this up. The mainstream media literally claims that mercury is GOOD for babies. Vitamins might kill you, they say, but mercury is good for you!

But hold on a second: I thought the theory behind vaccines was that weakened viruses would give the immune system a rehearsal so that it would build up antibodies to the real thing. Where does mercury, MSG or formaldehyde fit anywhere in that theory? Does your body benefit in any way from exposure to formaldehyde? Of course not. The very idea is ludicrous.

So are there such things are clean vaccines? I challenge you to try to find one. They simply don’t exist for the population at large. Healing Illness – A Natural Anti-Cancer Protocol

Western medicine treats the body as a collection of parts instead of as a synergistic organism. When it comes to treating broken bones and injured body parts, mainstream Western medicine is unequaled. When this same approach is used to treat illness and disease – fixing or repairing the parts where the symptoms of underlying illnesses manifest themselves, modern medicine fails miserably.

In the instance of cancer, instead of addressing the causes of cancer – toxins and a weakened immune system which result in a loss of proper cellular communication and oxidation and the cells mutating to cells that form a protective coating and replicate without dying – we see instead treatments that either slash, burn or poison away the tumors and cancer cells, which further weakens an immune system cancer has already defeated and only worsens the conditions that led to cancer to begin with.
As a result, the way is paved for the return of the cancer or the introduction of another cancer or serious condition. Even worse, the road to further illness is often made easier due to the damage to the immune system and major organs caused by the treatment of the symptom.

Nature, on the other hand, gives us an array of tools to beat cancer and the underlying causes that lead to cancer, including foods, vitamins, minerals, supplements and lifestyle choices. The key is not merely addressing the tumors and cancer cells that are the symptoms of cancer, but but addressing and eliminating the root causes that led to cancer to begin with and prevent it from being eliminated.
Here is a suggested protocol to eliminate cancer cells by either killing them or restoring them to normal function and to address the root causes of cancer based on what we know about cancer and what nature and lifestyle choices have to offer:

CLEANSING

As soon as possible, cleanse your body to get rid of built up toxins like heavy metals and pesticides, as well as the undigested food, fecal matter and gallstones that build up in the body by cleansing your colon and liver and by chelation to rid the body of heavy metals. Such contaminations are breeding grounds for, and causes of, disease and illness. A toxic and unclean body weakens the body`s immune system that should be your first line of defense. Plus, once cleansed, the body is much more receptive to the good measures you take to rebuild your immune system and fight disease.

It cannot be stressed enough how vitally important it is to cleanse, restore and protect the liver before, during and after your anti-cancer and disease battle. As the great cancer pioneer Max Gerson observed, cancer cannot develop unless the liver is impaired to begin with. An effective cancer fighting regimen can severely tax an already weakened liver because it will result in the release of a cascade of toxins that are released when cancer cells die. Such a release can overwhelm an already impaired liver and can even be fatal if measures are not taken to protect and regenerate the liver. Following is a suggested liver cleanse and suggested further measures to take to cleanse, detox, protect and help regenerate the vital liver:

Five day liver cleanse.

It is best to have day 4 on a Saturday or at a time when you are staying at home.

Day 1: Drink 1 liter (4 cups) of apple juice during the day. Eat as normal otherwise.
Day 2: Drink another liter of apple juice. Eat normally
Day 3: Drink a 3rd liter of apple juice. Eat normally
Day 4: Do not take any sold food after lunch time
6pm – Take one level tablespoon of Epsom salt in a glass of water
8pm – Take another tablespoon of Epsom salt in a glass of water. You may find that you already have to take a trip to the toilet before the 8pm Epsom salt.
10pm – Mix one half glass of olive oil and three quarter glass of freshly squeezed grape fruit juice by shaking it very well in a jar with a lid so that it mixes well and immediately get into bed after drinking the mixture. You will probably make more than one trip to the toilet during the night as well as during the next day.
Day 5:
6am: Take another tablespoon of Epsom salt in a glass of water
8am: Take one final tablespoon of Epsom salt in a glass of water.

You will find that many gallstones from the liver will be passed and one will notice them in the toilet. They will vary in size from about pin head size to 10mm. Gallstones in the liver are a major cause of many health problems.

The above liver cleanse can be repeated every month until one finds that for two months in succession no more gallstones are passed. The liver will then be clean. Other things to do for the liver:

* Coffee enemas – help open the bile ducts so bile and toxins can be released properly.
* Coconut oil – a wonderful item everyone should take, it helps maintain a good bile flow.
* Beetroot juice – is also good for the liver and bile flow.
* Turmeric – is a cancer fighter itself, especially for smokers, and it helps regulate bile flow.
* Milk thistle – is a must as it helps protect the liver and actually regenerate it
* Alpha lipoic acid – another liver supplement that also helps fight cancer
* Selenium – a third liver supplement that is good against cancer too.

In the Berkson Clinical Study, three women who were facing liver transplants or chemo with interferon (a horrendous treatment with very low success rates for hepatitis and cirhossis), took milk thistle, alpha lipoic acid and selenium, modified their diets a bit and got some daily exercise and restored their liver functions to normal.

Besides cleansing and detoxing your body, also cleanse your environment to the greatest extent possible of pesticides, herbicides, household cleansers, air fresheners and other manmade chemicals. In an ideal world, you would move to the country where there was plenty of fresh air and sunshine and less stress. In the real world you may not find that possible, so eliminate common toxins in your household, workplace and other places you spend time.

ELIMINATE ROOT CAUSES OF DISEASE IN YOUR MOUTH

If you have mercury amalgam fillings in your teeth, have them replaced. In many instances, this step alone has led to elimination of cancer. Cilantro and chlorella can help eliminate heavy metal accumulations in the body. A specially blended and wildcrafted formula which utilizes cilantro and chlorella is Metal Magic by Jon Barron.

Perhaps worse than amalgam fillings is root canals. According to Bill Henderson, author of “Cure Your Cancer” and “Cancer-Free”, root canals is “the big elephant in the room”. DIET, NUTRITION, NATURAL HYGIENE & LIFESTYLE

No matter what supplements or treatments you may choose to combat cancer, you must first establish a good foundation. While vitamins, minerals, herbs and other supplements may help you beat the symptoms of cancer and help boost your immune system, the diet and lifestyle you live will be the ultimate keys to beating cancer and keeping it at bay once and for all because in the end it is your own body which will win the war.

To fail to embrace proper diet, nutrition and lifestyle and look for answers in supplements alone is akin to putting a new roof on a house that is falling apart from a broken foundation.
Immediately eliminate bad habits and begin building good ones so that you will make sure that you no longer have habits that weaken your immune system and that you will be able to build your body to fight and conquer illness. A sedentary lifestyle with a poor diet, lack of pure water, sunshine and fresh air, and constant exposure to toxins will in time lead to bad health conditions. On the other hand, also be sure to get an abundance of sleep and physical rest to conserve energy for healing and cleansing. Remember, bad health habits are open invitations for illness and disease to enter your body.

Begin and maintain a healthy immune-boosting and cancer fighting diet. A good balanced diet, pure water, fresh air, sunshine and mild to moderate exercise are some of the essentials. You will find that a good diet does not have to be a bad tasting diet – far from it! However, it should be noted that the very best and most healthy diet is one that is close to the diet our ancestors evolved to utilize: lots of fresh and uncooked vegetables, fruits, nuts, roots and tubers, and fish and free range meat not subject to factory farming or feed lot practices and uncontaminated by growth hormones, artificial fertilizers or pesticides. Granted that is a tall order for fish and meat, but it is strongly recommended to consume ONLY such healthy non-toxic fish and meats and to limit meat consumption period when fighting cancer. It is also best to consume little or no grain or dairy products. It should be noted that of all the foods, essentially only raw vegetables and fruits contribute to an alkaline pH. Juiced vegetables and fruits are an excellent form of nutrition (Note: eat much more vegetables than fruit due to the high sugar content of fruits).

The Budwig Diet is an excellent and proven cancer fighting diet which is highly recommended, especially the flaxseed oil and cottage cheese portion of the diet. NOTE: When using the Budwig Diet, avoid alpha-lipoic acid and vitamin e supplementation. Despite what some overly zealous Budwig proponents believe, other anti-oxidants and supplements are fine with the Budwig diet.

Take the time to chew each bite thoroughly – as many as 50 chews if possible – to help aid digestion and take maximum advantage of the available nutrition.

Fasting

So long as you are not physically wasted, fasting is an excellent way to begin virtually any disease fighting protocol. It helps the body eliminate wastes and toxins and reset itself to optimum health levels for healing and fighting cancer and other illness. Many people are able to beat disease and illness of all kinds, including cancer, simply by fasting.

After an initial fast of a few days or longer where you provide only the water needed to satisfy thirst, continue with a one-day-a-week fast. It will help keep your body cleansed and, if you are overweight, also help you reach and maintain your optimum weight. Two good daily fasts in addition to water only fasts when fighting cancer would be 1) a dark grape fast where you eat all the dark grapes and seeds you want but nothing else other than water (the concord grape is probably the best choice and seeds are a must!), and 2) a juiced vegetables fast.

Proper Food Combining

It is important to practice proper food combining in the cause of disease as this prevents the putrefaction and fermentation of foods within the digestive system, and therefore toxicity, caused by mixing a predominantly protein food with a predominantly starchy food at the same meal. For example a poached egg on wholewheat toast. Fruits should not be combined with vegetables for the same reason. Proper food combining requires far less digestive energy which is then released for other more important bodily tasks.

The Importance of Sunshine

From the very first days that man walked upon the earth, sunshine has been a key to health and survival. The importance of the synergistic relationship between health and regular sunshine cannot be over-emphasized for both physical healing and mental health (which is itself a key to physical healing for cancer and any other illness). Contrary to popular beliefs about the harmful effects of over exposure to the sun, abundant sunlight has extremely high success rates for:

* Safely stopping tumor growth, not destroying tumors (the only effect that conventional medicine recognizes), but stopping growth.
* Preventing cancer by stimulating the body`s vitamin D production.
* Preventing influenza like the bird flu also by vitamin D production.

Don`t overdo the sunshine, but sunshine is essential to the production of vitamin D, and, strange as it may sound, has been found to be essential in warding off melanoma as well as other cancers. Be sure to get full body sun exposure avoiding the heat of the day and not allowing oneself to become more than mildly “pink” or sunburned by gradually increasing exposure time from a few minutes to perhaps a full hour and more each day.

Fair skin and the number of moles are the major risk factor for melanoma (skin cancer), not sunlight overexposure.

In 1959. Jane C Wright, directing cancer research at Bellevue Memorial Medical Center in New York City, instructed fifteen cancer patients to stay outdoors as much as possible that summer in natural sunlight without wearing their glasses, and particularly without sunglasses. By that Autumn, the tumors in 14 of 15 had not grown, and some patients had gotten better. It was discovered that the one patient that didn`t have good results had not fully understood the instructions – while she had not worn sunglasses, she had continued to wear her prescription glasses. This blocking of UV into her eyes was enough to stop the benefits enjoyed by the other fourteen.

Indirect Sunlight Into the Eyes Guidelines

You really can`t get enough of this type of light. Sitting in a screen enclosed porch would be the minimum exposure and would require three times the duration to get the same effect as walking in full sunlight. Walking in full sunlight might only require one hour to get full benefit. Wearing a hat with a brim in bright direct sunlight should be sufficient UV protection. The UV problem for eyes is greatly over exaggerated to sell sunglasses which, like sunscreens, should be used sparingly.

Exposure to Nature and the Good Earth

From the good earth did life spring and mankind lived for eons in close contact and relative harmony with the good earth. Mankind developed for eons in harmony with nature. It is beyond mere theory that regular exposure to soil organisms and and the good earth provides both physical and mental healing. Many believe that there is an actual healing synergy from exposure to the earth itself. Today, far too many of us are shut off from nature in the artificial and closed environments of offices and closed in dwellings. To remedy this:

Take frequent walks in yards, fields and woods. Of course, seek out areas that are likely to be as free as possible from pesticides, herbicides and other chemical contamination.
As often as possible, take off your shoes, socks and sandals and go barefooted in the soil and grass.
Plant vegetable and flower gardens (and use only organic products!). If that is not possible, use pots and other containers for patio, balconies and indoors. Working with your hands (and feet) in the soil is one of the most physically and mentally healthy things you can do. Those who have not had the pleasure will be amazed at the peace and tranquility you will experience. Indoor plants bring the added benefit of adding extra oxygen and removing toxins from you air. Everyone should have plenty of them!

Rebuild and strengthen the body`s natural immune system. It is very likely that a weakened immune system contributed to your illness in the first place. It is absolutely certain that a rebuilt and strengthened immune system will help you beat your illness and keep it at bay. Again, good diet, nutrition and habits are all important – they lay the foundation for a strong and healthy immune system. However, they are not enough by themselves. You should build a good foundation and then make your body a healthy fortress against disease and illness. Quite simply, disease and illness hate healthy hosts. The stronger your immune system is, the harder it is for disease to survive and grow. And, to be the very strongest you can be, you need extra measures in the form of supplements as well as the healthiest foods. An oleander extract very much like you get when you make oleander soup was tested in Europe in 1986 – 87 and found to have six times the immune stimulating activity of the most powerful immune stimulators known to man.

Maintain an Alkaline pH and Get Plenty of Oxygen to the Cellular Level

Once cancer has gained a foothold, it does not survive well in the presence of an alkaline cellular pH level, nor in the presence of highly oxygenated cells. As Nobel Laureate Otto Warburg discovered, low cellular oxygen is a primary causal factor for cancer. His protege, Dr. Johanna Budwig of Germany, continued his work and found that in order for proper cellular utilization of oxygen to take place, our diets must contain adequate amounts of unsaturated fatty acids.

Although many people use food grade hydrogen peroxide to obtain extra oxygen, perhaps a better option without the concerns some have with hydrogen peroxide is the product OxyGen. Each capsule contains oxygen and the equivalent of 12 drops of 35% food grade hydrogen peroxide derived from a combination of magnesium peroxide and pure anaerocidal oxygen.

Be Sure to Take These Cancer Fighting Minerals

Make sure you have plenty of iodine, selenium, magnesium, potassium, zinc, vitamin C, calcium and Vitamin D. All have been proven to be essential in beating and avoiding cancer. As mentioned above, cancer cells have lost the ability to be shut off by the body in what is called cellular apoptosis. These cancerous cells simply become abnormal and outlive the other cells in their normal cell life/replacement cycle and end up crowding out a territory over time. Iodine goes in and both does away with the surrounding cyst where cancer has set up residence and then also goes in and allows the specific shut down of the individual cells that are abnormal, diseased, or beset w/ pathogens to make room for new cells.

Some notes on iodine and selenium:

Many people who take iodine and selenium take far too little for maximum therapeutic benefit. Both elemental iodine and potassium iodine should be taken and the total amount of iodine should be 100mg or more, perhaps beginning at 50mg and working up.

Magnascent is a good form or elemental iodine. Lugols is also widely used. Since Lugols contains both elemental iodine and potassium iodine, the total amount of iodine one can take with Lugols is 300 mg.
Selenium MUST be taken with iodine in order for iodine to be effective.

The best form of supplemental selenium for fighting cancer appears to be methylselenocysteine. The most common form of supplemental selenium is selenomethionine whose general proteins have no anticancer activity. Another form, sodium selenite is more frequently metabolized to the toxic metabolite hydrogen selenide (H2Se), which does have anticancer effects but is more toxic than selenomethionine. Its primary mode of killing cancer cells (and at high levels, normal cells) is through the process of cell necrosis. Cell necrosis provokes inflammation and may kill healthy cells along with cancer cells.
The recommended form of selenium, methyselenocysteine is found naturally in some vegetables including garlic, brassicas, leeks, and onions, especially when these are grown in high selenium soil. Methylselenocysteine is easily converted to methylselenol which has been demonstrated to be an effective anticancer form of selenium. Rather than killing cancer cells by necrosis, methylselenol kills cancer cells through apoptosis. Apoptosis is an orderly process of cellular self-destruction that does not provoke inflammatory responses. Methylselenol is also known to inhibit angiogenesis in beginning cancer tumors. Angiogenesis, the creation of new blood vessels, is necessary for cancer cells to grow into a tumor. For cancer prevention, doses of 200 to 400 mcg of methylselenocysteine are generally considered safe without medical supervision. Nutritionally-oriented physicians may use as much as 900 to 2,000 mcg selenium from methylselenocysteine daily as part of a comprehensive cancer treatment protocol.

Drink Lots of Healthy Clean Water

Water is essential for all healthy life; however, regular tap water contains trace amounts of hundreds to thousands of pesticides, carcinogens and other industrial pollutants. For that reason, the author recommends only the purest drinking water, such as reverse osmosis filtered water.

Exercise in Moderation

Regular exercise does not have to be grueling, but it is essential. Exercise stimulates the immune system, stimulates the production of natural human growth hormone, stimulates the production of hormones and pheromones that make us happier and healthier, and simply leads to a longer and happier life period. Innumerable studies have demonstrated the overall health benefits of exercise and the negative effects of a sedentary lifestyle lacking in exercise. It is not a coincidence that studies have shown up that those who exercise only a few hours each week have up to 50% less chance of developing many different kinds of cancer.

Do Not Neglect the Vital Trace Minerals

Trace minerals are essential in beating cancer and are in fact essential to virtually all of the body`s important processes when it comes to utilizing vitamins, minerals and enzymes for good health. Two hundred years ago, the top layer of our soil contained up to 80 or more different minerals. Today, over-farming and the chemical destruction of soil micro-organisms has stripped soils the world over of all but a handful of bio-available minerals, and even those remaining minerals are at levels that are only fractions of what were in the soil 100 years ago and continuing to decline.

Man`s body is designed to utilize at least 60 or more trace minerals on a daily basis, and did so for thousands of years by eating the plants that processed such minerals (and the animals that ate the plants with processed minerals. Quite simply, without minerals nothing else works as designed, and every mineral deficiency, whether major or trace minerals, results in the body compensating in one or more ways which are often unhealthy. The only way to get an adequate supply now is to supplement, and the very best supplementation is from plant derived minerals, such as those that come from the famous plant prehistoric vegetable deposits in Utah and contain 75 trace minerals. Get Plenty of Healthy Omega 3`s

Good natural sources include extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, avocados, and organic butter, or better yet grass-fed organic butter. An excellent supplement is Doctor Mercola`s Krill Oil, which also contains a healthy ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 fatty acids and has been shown to help ward against cachexia (the wasting of non-fat body tissue, especially skeletal muscle tissue).

Things to Avoid

Remember, what you avoid can be just as important as what you consume: Avoid sugar to the greatest extent possible. Sugar feeds cancer and other illnesses and causes a myriad of other health problems. Refined sugar is also the number one single cause of health problems in the entire world! Likewise avoid bread and other items containing bleached white flour, which is essentially empty and harmful calories that convert to sugar once ingested. Other items to avoid include non-fermented soy, pork, MSG, ALL charred foods and foods cooked at high temperature, aluminum and coated cookware, micro-waved food, food in plastic containers and styrofoam.

GO ON THE ATTACK

The next element of beating your disease and keeping it at bay is to go on the attack. As a matter of fact, all of the elements of the this anti-cancer and disease protocol are elements of attack, because they make the body strong and inhospitable to disease. What I am talking about here is more than just making the body inhospitable to your disease – I am talking about going on the attack and wiping it out! In the case of cancer, there are many very potent anti-cancer supplements. such as the ones listed above and several others.

One such supplement, named Sutherlandia OPC (not to be confused with the European anti-oxidant named OPC), is based on a remedy I have researched and written about, and has been used for the past five plus years in South Africa to treat HIV and cancer. Several thousand HIV patients have taken Sutherlandia OPC now and all are reported to be still alive and well with their symptoms either reversed or stabilized. Of the hundreds of cancer patients over the past five plus years, only 8 have been reported to not survive (5 were in their very final days and could not hold down the supplement and another three succumbed to organ failure as a likely result of prior traditional Western treatment via chemo). All the rest, save two who stopped taking the supplement once the tumors were gone and returned to their old lifestyles (and had the cancer return) are now alive and cancer free or else have their cancers in remission and tumors continuing to shrink. Iodine (see above) is an absolute must for anyone fighting cancer, especially breast cancer. Many people have beaten cancer with iodine supplementation alone and it is a supremely powerful item to include in any cancer-fighting protocol.

A supreme cancer tumor destroyer and cancer fighter for many forms of cancer is Inositol/IP6, such as is found in the product Cell Forte Max3. According to several users interviewed by the author, it often seems to just melt away tumors in a very short time period, and works well to normalize the PSA readings in prostate cancer sufferers. One caution – Inositol/IP6 may deplete minerals and/or interfere with mineral absorption, especially calcium and magnesium. Be sure to get plenty of Calcium and Magnesium (a good thing to do anyway) and take a good mineral supplement, preferably plant derived minerals (a second good thing to do in any event). Intensive cancer fighting dosage calls for 8 to 16 capsules per day. Note: intensive use of Inositol/IP6 is not recommended for more than a few months at a time, with lesser maintenance doses of one to two capsules the rest of the time and occasional breaks from the maintenance dose of up to one month (to guard against mineral depletion).

Curcumin has many similar compounds to oleander and is a potent and highly proven cancer fighter and preventive. Curcumin has been particularly effective against cancer with smokers and helps prevent cancer in general from spreading. Independent research studies on the anti-cancer properties of turmeric suggests that Curcumin has the potential for treatment of five top cancers in the U.S. — colon, breast, prostate, lung and skin. An added plus is that turmeric is a wonderful anti-inflammatory, and thus would be a vital addition for those who have brain cancer, where swelling is always a concern. To fight cancer, 2500 to 3000 mg per day is recommended, divided into two to three doses and taken either with meals or with bromelain as described below. The best sources of curcumin may be the Life Extension Foundation and Turmeric-Curcumin.com. Curcumin is can also be obtained by taking the common spice turmeric, though turmeric and most curcumin supplements are not very bioavailable. Coconut oil or milk may help absorption and some studies have indicated that absorption may also be increased with 5-10 mg of bioperine (or else black pepper).

A good blood tonic, such as the Blood Support one formulated by Jon Barron and made by Baseline Nutritionals, helps cleanse the blood and the liver and makes the body inhospitable to cancer cells.

Vitamin B-17, also known as laetrile, is a very potent and proven cancer fighter that is highly recommended although difficult to find (the best source is apricot pits). Note: laetrile by itself, or even as the primary element of a cancer fighting protocol, is best used by people who have been given 12-18 months or longer survival estimates, as it normally works best when taken for a prolonged period of time.

Colloidal Silver is another must in my opinion – it has been shown to be deadly to single cell organisms and pathogens, and various cancers have been shown to have viral and/or fungal qualities, at least after they have become established. The caution with Colloidal Silver is that it may also eliminate beneficial bacteria when taken in amounts large enough to fight cancer and so it is a good idea when taking colloidal silver to also supplement with probiotics (yet another good thing to do anyway – especially after cleanses). Many recommend that colloidal silver be taken with Colloidal Gold because gold appears to enhance the silver`s actions when cancer is present. Take one to two ounces or more daily while actively fighting cancer.

Bromelain. Several studies have indicated anti-cancer and anti-tumor properties of the enzyme bromelain, which comes from the pineapple plant. One of the primary anti-cancer properties of bromelain may be it`s ability to help prevent cancer from growing and spreading. Bromelain is also a powerful binder which can greatly increase the absorption of other supplements and medications (for that reason, a qualified medical professional. preferably a naturopathic one, should be consulted before taking large amounts of bromelain with other medications where increased absorption might be a cause for concern). Besides attacking cancer, preventing it`s spread and tumor growth by the process of angiogenesis is critical. Many of the items in this protocol work against angiogenesis; however there are also two powerful angiogenesis inhibitors that should be included for maximum effect: Shark Cartilage and Bindweed. Studies have indicated that shark cartilage is effective at preventing cancer tumors from growing and spreading and bindweed was shown to be 100 times more effective by weight than shark cartilage.

So you must do whatever it takes to remove stress from your life and make your mental attitude your ally. Meditate, take yoga, change jobs, retire, go fishing, find a pleasant hobby” do whatever you must to remove stress and have a positive mental outlook.

Equally important, if not more so, is addressing any emotional issues from the present or the past which may be contributing to stress and preventing the body from optimal healing – may even have contributed to your development of cancer in the first place. There have been many reports of cancer going into spontaneous remission after people successfully addressed emotional issues and stress.
Remember, anyone or any issue which introduces or keeps worry and stress in your life is neither a friend nor an ally during this fight. And make no mistake, it is a fight – likely the most important one of your life. But it is a fight you can and will win. Think it, believe it and live it.

70 percent of double mastectomies are pointless

70 percent of breast cancer patients who undergo a double mastectomy do not actually need the procedure, according to a study to be presented at the Quality Care Symposium of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

The study was conducted by researchers from the University of Michigan, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, the University of Southern California and Wayne State University, and funded by grants from the National Cancer Institute.

Worldwide, breast cancer accounts for 23 percent of all women’s cancers and 14 percent of all women’s cancer deaths. According to the American Cancer Society, 229,060 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States this year, and the disease will cause 39,920 deaths.

In recent years, many women have sought to reduce their risk of breast cancer recurrence by undergoing the removal of both breasts even when one of the breasts is healthy, a procedure known as contralateral prophylactic mastectomy. Many health advocates have raised concerns that this aggressive treatment option is being overused.

The researchers interviewed 1,446 women who had been successfully treated for breast cancer without experiencing recurrence. They examined the types of treatment received, as well as at the patients’ clinical indications for double mastectomy. They found that among women who underwent a mastectomy, almost 20 percent had both breasts removed. Seven percent of all women in the study had a double mastectomy.

90 percent of women who had undergone a double mastectomy said that they had been very worried about the possibility of recurrence. Yet, according to the researchers’ assessment of the actual risk of recurrence, a full 70 percent of women who underwent contralateral prophylactic mastectomy had done so without good cause. That’s because in the vast majority of cases, a diagnosis of cancer in one breast is not correlated with an increased risk of cancer in the other breast.

“Women appear to be using worry over cancer recurrence to choose contralateral prophylactic mastectomy,” researcher Sarah Hawley said. “This does not make sense, because having a non-affected breast removed will not reduce the risk of recurrence in the affected breast.”

“Not appropriate”
The only women in whom cancer in a single breast is associated with a risk of cancer in the other breast are those with either a history of breast or ovarian cancer in two or more immediate family members, or with a specific mutation in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes.

“For women who do not have a strong family history or a genetic finding, we would argue it’s probably not appropriate to get the unaffected breast removed,” Hawley said.

In addition to the extra cost and the impact on the patient’s life of removing to breasts rather than one, a double mastectomy is associated with significantly more complications and a more difficult recovery than a single mastectomy.

The researchers are now working on a tool to help women make decisions about their breast cancer treatment options.

“A decision tool like ours will solicit common misconceptions about breast cancer treatment and give women feedback to help them fully understand the options and risks involved,” Hawley said.

New European Guidance on Vitamin D Intake

When it comes to vitamin D research, there seems to be no end to the good news. No matter what ailment is being evaluated, vitamin D churns out positive results. Below, I’ll review seven recent findings from the medical literature.

Keep in mind that while these studies looked at the health effects of vitamin D supplementation, the ideal way to optimize your vitamin D levels is through appropriate sun exposure.

If sun is unavailable for whatever reason, next best would be a safe tanning bed, as UV ray exposure appears to have health benefits over and beyond the production of vitamin D.

Vitamin D and Strength Training – A Potent Combo to Reduce Dangerous Visceral Fat

That said, one of the most exciting findings, from my perspective, is that vitamin D supplementation combined with resistance training may help decrease your waist-to-hip ratio – a measurement that is far better at determining your risk for type 2 diabetes and heart disease than body mass index (BMI).

The study, published in the journal Clinical Nutrition,1 included 23 overweight and obese participants, all of whom completed 12 weeks of resistance training. Half of them also received 4,000 IU’s of vitamin D, while the other half got a placebo. Interestingly, analysis revealed an inverse association between the change in vitamin D status and the change in waist-to-hip ratio.

According to the authors:

“The results of the current study demonstrated that vitamin D supplementation improved muscular power in healthy overweight and obese individuals within four weeks and that elevated vitamin D status was associated with greater losses in waist circumference, with no additional benefits in lean mass accumulation, muscular strength, or glucose tolerance during participation in a 12-week resistance exercise training program.

The current results support previous findings that indicate a relationship between vitamin D status and waist circumference rather than fat mass. The inverse relationship with waist circumference is particularly important as abdominal fat has been implicated as an important factor in the development of Type 2 diabetes… Waist circumference is also an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Therefore, the greater decrease in waist circumference associated with higher vitamin D intake represents a potential reduction in risk for metabolic disease and cardiovascular risk.”

New Tables for Waist Measurement

This recent observation on vitamin D and its connection to fat mass and waist circumference prompted me to research the topic further and compile the following two charts2 to help you guide your health progress. I am convinced that properly measuring your waist size is far more important than monitoring your weight, as it will actually differentiate your fat mass.

More Evidence Vitamin D May Help Prevent Type 2 Diabetes

Additional support for the theory that vitamin D can be beneficial in the fight against type 2 diabetes was published in June.3 Here, the researchers found “a strong additive interaction between abdominal obesity and insufficient 25(OH)D in regard to insulin resistance.” They also claim 47 percent of the increased odds of insulin resistance can be explained by the interaction between insufficient vitamin D levels and a high BMI. They concluded that:

“Within a cross-sectional, nationally representative sample, abdominal obesity and insufficient 25(OH)D interact to synergistically influence the risk of insulin resistance.”

Yet another study4 published in Diabetes Care also suggests vitamin D supplements may help prevent type 2 diabetes mellitus in people with pre-diabetes. While the study is only an observational one and cannot establish causality, the researchers report that the participants who had the highest vitamin D levels were 30 percent less likely to develop diabetes during the three-year evaluation period, compared to those with the lowest levels.

Vitamin D Shows Eye Health Benefits

Next, a study5 published in January found that supplementing with vitamin D3 helps rejuvenate aging eyes by reducing inflammation and amyloid beta – a risk factor for age-related macular degeneration, which is the leading cause of blindness. According to the authors:

“Vitamin D3 plays a key role in immune regulation and may protect against the aging process. A focal point for age-related changes is the outer retina of the eye where there is high metabolic demand resulting in a gradual increase in extracellular deposition, inflammation, and cell loss giving rise to visual decline. Here, we demonstrate that vitamin D3 administration for only 6 weeks in aged mice significantly impacts on this aging process… Recently, vitamin D3 has been linked epidemiologically to protection against age-related macular degeneration. Hence, vitamin D3 enrichment is likely to represent a beneficial route for those at risk.”

Dietary Vitamin D and Sun Exposure Linked to Reduced Alzheimer’s Risk

Speaking of amyloid beta, this component is not just a risk factor for macular degeneration, it’s also found in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients. No wonder then that scientists have discovered an association between vitamin D status and your risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.6 As reported by Dr. William Grant for The Vitamin D Council:7

“This cohort included women over the age of 75 years at time of enrollment and was designed to study risk factors for hip fractures over a four-year period. Women who had taken vitamin D supplements in the 18 months prior to enrollment were excluded. Dietary factors and midday sun exposure habits were examined at time of enrollment. The mean dietary vitamin D intake was 334±172 IU/day. The presence of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias was assessed seven years after enrollment.

Those in the highest fifth of vitamin D intake had one-quarter the incidence rate of Alzheimer’s disease as the other four fifths… In addition, those in the highest fifth of sun exposure had half the incidence rate of Alzheimer’s disease…”

‘Sunshine Vitamin’ Helps Treat Tuberculosis and Slash Pneumonia Deaths

Vitamin D’s ability to fight infection8 has again been highlighted in studies relating to tuberculosis and pneumonia. In the first case, researchers at the University of London discovered that sun exposure – or a high dose of supplemental vitamin D – can be helpful in the treatment of tuberculosis, shortening the length of the illness.9, 10 Tuberculosis is a lung disease caused by the Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacterium. It’s one of the top three causes of death, worldwide, for women between the ages of 15 and 44. As reported by CBS News:11

“Before antibiotics were readily available, doctors would to send their patients to receive heliotherapy – basically prescribed sunbathing. The practice was stopped since more effective antibiotics were invented, but physicians have often wondered why the sunshine treatment seemed to somewhat work.

Researchers at Queen Mary at the University of London decided to test out the old treatment with modern day antibiotics. What they discovered was that when coupled together, antibiotics and high doses of vitamin D – which is created in the body when it is exposed the sun – helped people recover faster from tuberculosis.”

Ninety-five tuberculosis patients were included in the study. While all received antibiotics, 44 were given supplemental vitamin D, and the remaining 51 received a placebo. Those who received vitamin D cleared the tuberculosis bacterium in just 23 days, compared to 36 days for those given a placebo. The vitamin D group also had less inflammation during the treatment period.

According to the authors, one of the ways vitamin D helps modulate your immune system is via calcitriol, the active metabolite of vitamin D, which induces innate antimicrobial responses in your body and suppresses proinflammatory cytokine responses.

Meanwhile, Dutch scientists have found that measuring vitamin D levels in patients’ bodies can accurately predict their risk of dying from pneumonia within a month of admission to the hospital. The findings, which were presented at the European Respiratory Society Annual Congress,12 suggest that treating patients who have pneumonia with vitamin D supplements may stimulate their immune systems and improve outcomes. Adding vitamin D measurement to the pneumonia severity index could also help improve the accuracy of this prognostic tool.

According to GP Online:13

“Researchers examined disease severity and outcomes in 272 adults attending the emergency department with community-acquired pneumonia. Over half (53 percent) of patients were vitamin D deficient, of which 24 percent had severe deficiency. The team then looked at vitamin D status among these patients and compared this to their immune responses, including levels of C-reactive protein, total cortisol and leukocytes.

They found severe vitamin D deficiency raised the risk of intensive care admission and 30-day mortality. Levels of vitamin D independently predicted 30-day mortality, and improved the accuracy of the PSI score from 78 percent to 85 percent.

Co-author Dr Sabine Meijvis… said: ‘Based on these results, [testing] vitamin D levels on admissions could be a useful prognostic biomarker for patients with pneumonia.’ She added: ‘Based on the observational design of the study, we are unable to establish a causal relationship between vitamin D levels and adverse outcomes. However, when future studies are able to confirm such a causal relationship, vitamin D supplementation might be a promising candidate for adjuvant treatment during pneumonia.'”

Correction of Vitamin D Deficiency Improves Seizure Control in Epilepsy

Last but not least, vitamin D appears to be beneficial for those with epilepsy as well. Hungarian researchers discovered that by correcting vitamin D deficiencies, epileptics were able to control their seizures better.14

The pilot study included 13 subjects between the ages of 19 and 60, who had had epilepsy anywhere between 10-42 years. The median vitamin D levels at the outset of the study was 11.8 ng/ml, ranging from less than 4 ng/ml up to 34.2 ng/ml. All subjects were given a one-time mega-dose of vitamin D3, ranging from 40,000 IU’s all the way up to 200,000 IU’s, followed by a daily dose of 2,000-2,600 IU’s a day for three months, in an effort to correct each individual’s vitamin D status and bring them up to at least 30 ng/ml.

At the 90-day follow-up, the median vitamin D level for the group was 38 ng/ml, ranging from 23.3 to 45 ng/ml. They then tallied the number of seizures experienced during the three-month long treatment period, compared to the three months prior to treatment.

Ten out of 13 had a decrease in the number of seizures; five of which experienced more than a 50 percent reduction. Two participants had more seizures, while one experienced no change at all. Overall, the group had a 40 percent reduction in the number of seizures. While the authors did not offer an explanation for the results, they did note that vitamin D receptors are present in the brain.

New European Guidance on Vitamin D Intake

The Multiple Sclerosis Trust16 also noted that researchers are studying vitamin D deficiency in people with multiple sclerosis as well, to determine a safe and therapeutic dose. In a surprising but positive move, the European Food Safety Authority has raised the RDA for vitamin D supplementation to levels far beyond American guidelines. The EU recommendations are now as follows:15 •Adults 18 years or older = 4,000 IU/day
•Children 11-17 years of age = 4,000 IU/day
•Children 1-10 years of age = 2,000 IU/day
•Infants less than 1year of age = 1,000 IU/day

Reminder: The Best Form of Vitamin D Does Not Come in a Pill…

Again, while this article is focused on research related to vitamin D supplementation, it’s important to remember that the IDEAL way to optimize your vitamin D levels is through appropriate sun or safe tanning bed exposure. While your skin does create vitamin D3 in response to sun light, which is theoretically the same as the D3 you get from an oral supplement, there’s cause to believe that the vitamin D created from sun exposure may have additional health benefits.

If Taking a Vitamin D Supplement, Take the Right Form

Keep in mind that if you do opt for a supplement, make sure you’re taking vitamin D3 and not the synthetic D2. This is important, as a recent analysis17 of 50 randomized controlled trials, which included a total of 94,000 participants, showed:
•A six percent relative reduction in mortality among those who used vitamin D3, but
•A two percent relative risk increase among those who used D2

Also, while Europe is doing the responsible thing by increasing the recommended daily allowance for vitamin D, it’s important to realize that the most important factor is your serum vitamin D level (the level in your blood), not the dose. The only way to determine whether you’re within the therapeutic range is to regularly test your vitamin D levels. If you’re like most people, you’ll likely need far more than 4,000 IU’s a day. According to the most recent research, the ideal adult dose is closer to 8,000 IU’s a day in order to achieve serum levels at or above 40 ng/ml.

Seven healthy habits…

Now that this long holiday season is over, it’s time to review our resolutions or contemplate how we should begin working toward changing our bad health habits into good ones. If you haven’t made any resolutions yet, or if you’re questioning the integrity of what you’ve considered, here are seven suggestions (with subdivisions).

(1) Are you eating meat? Try eating less. But when you do, make sure it’s from humanely treated grass fed livestock and not factory farms that use CAFO (confined animal feeding operations). The higher prices may slow down your meat consumption, which is not a bad thing.

You won’t be supporting the animal cruelty of factory farming. And you won’t be eating unhealthy meat products from livestock fed GMO grains instead of grazing on grass, injected with hormones to make them fatter faster, and antibiotics to contain the infectious diseases fermenting in the filth of their miserable, confined quarters.

(2) Eat more organic fruits and vegetables, especially greens. Eat raw sometimes; steam lightly when you cook. When you eat, chew more, talk less, and don’t stress. Practice this until it becomes a habit. Consider adding enzyme supplements to aid digestion.

(3) Buy a masticating juicer and juice one to three times a week. Then try an occasional juice fast of three days or more. Another option is to juice fast once a week often.

(4) Avoid packaged and processed foods. Buy bulk produce and grains and breads from trusted bakeries that don’t use bromide in the baking process. Avoid the “convenience” of drive-throughs.

Keep some raw nuts and dried fruits or trail mix and fresh fruit in your car instead. Stay away from aspartame laced products, such as diet sodas and chewing gum.

(5) Realize that gut health includes but goes beyond digestion, which is important. Intestinal flora also controls most of your immune system response and affects your moods.

Learn how to make fermented foods and beverages that will enhance your intestinal flora’s beneficial bacteria. At least invest in a good probiotic supplement.

Add more magnesium to your diet with foods and supplements. Westerners are magnesium deficient while taking in too much calcium. That’s a ratio for disaster in many ways for many organs. Magnesium is the master mineral involved in over 300 metabolic functions.

Ignore the fats are bad for you scam. Learn which fats are healthy and the importance of omega-3 fats. You need to balance those omega-6 fats with omega-3 fats. Our brain tissues are mostly fats, so is the myelin sheathing of our nerves that helps transmit impulses easily. Without cholesterol our bodies can’t begin to convert sunlight to vitamin D3.

(6) Don’t use toxic household cleaners and cosmetics. If you live in an area that fluoridates tap water, don’t drink that toxic stuff. If you can’t afford your own reverse-osmosis system, grab some large containers and fill up cheaply from machines in almost any food store that use both carbon filtering and reverse osmosis.

(7) Everybody talks about exercising more each new year. But this time consider a type of exercise that gives you more energy instead of wearing yourself out. Hatha yoga, chi-gong, tai-chi, rebounding, and walking outdoors in nature are energizing and regenerative. Meditation may lead to more and more benefits mentally, spiritually, and even physically.

If you’re concerned about being isolated as a health nut or food elitist after some of this, try getting involved with a local community activity, such as a Weston A. Price Foundation regional chapter, or activist group campaigning against fluoridation or GMOs.
